Sainik School Seat Reservation Rules
Sainik Schools Society, on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, has created the following standard category-wise reservation rules that divide the seats in Sainik Schools as follows:
- Each Sainik School reserves 67% of seats for students who belong to the same State or Union Territory where the school is located. This is called the Home State quota.
-
The remaining 33% of seats go to students from other States or Union Territories. This is called the Other State quota.
-
Inside both these quotas, seats are divided further:
- 15% of seats go to Scheduled Caste (SC) students.
-
7.5% of seats go to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students.
-
27% of seats go to Other Backward Class (OBC-NCL) students, as per the Central List.
-
After this, from the leftover seats, 25% are kept for children of Defence personnel (serving or retired) in both Home and Other State quotas.
-
In the Other State quota, no single State or UT can take more than 25% of seats in any category. For example, if a category has 10 seats under the Other State quota, then a maximum of 3 seats can go to students from one State/UT.
-
For Class 6 Sainik School admissions, every school keeps either 10% of total seats or at least 10 seats (whichever is more) for girls.
-
If an SC, ST, or OBC-NCL student gets admission on general merit (without using reserved marks), then the school will count that seat in the general category, not in the reserved category.
-
For the newly approved Sainik Schools, these domicile or category reservations are not applicable.

New Sainik School Seats - 40% Route
In New Sainik Schools, 40% of the total seats are filled only through the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Exam (AISSEE), which NTA conducts. This process is called the 40% Route. Students who want admission under this route must:
-
Appeared in the AISSEE exam (the same exam used for old Sainik Schools).
-
Compete for admission based on rank, category reservation, and the number of seats available.
-
Select the New Sainik School as a choice while filling the AISSEE form, because counselling happens centrally.
Eligibility for 40% Route
-
For Class 6, the child must be 10–12 years old as on 31st March 2026
-
For Class 9, the child must be 13–15 years old on 31st March 2026
-
The student must score above the AISSEE cutoff set by NTA.
-
The student must show documents like domicile, category certificate, and age proof during counselling.
-
The student must have passed Class 8 from a recognised school board.

New Sainik School Seats - 60% Route
The 60% route means that each New Sainik School (NSS) can keep up to 60% of its seats for its own students. These seats are given only to students who are already studying in a New Sainik School. Admission under this route follows a school-wise merit list, not the All-India merit list of the AISSEE exam.
Eligibility for 60% Route
-
The student must already be studying in a New Sainik School.
-
Domicile or category rules (like SC, ST, OBC, defence quota) do not matter here. Selection depends only on marks and rank within that school.
-
If taking admission to Class 9, then a candidate must have passed/appearing in Class 8, as of 31st March 2026.
How Sainik School Seats Are Filled under 60% Route?
-
First, the school decides how many seats go to the 60% route. For example, if a school has 100 seats in Class 6 (or Class 9, if offered), then up to 60 of those seats are for its own students.
-
The remaining seats (up to 40) go to the 40% route, which is open to all students through the AISSEE exam.
-
For the 60% seats, the school compares only the ranks of its internal students.

Sainik School Seats for Girls
Traditionally, Sainik Schools admitted only boys, but from 2021–22, the government started giving 10% seats to girls in Class 6. All 33 old Sainik Schools follow this rule, and some admit more girls if seats allow. A few schools, like Chittorgarh and Korukonda, also take 5–8 girls in Class 9, depending on vacancies.
In 2021, the government started New Sainik Schools under the Public-Private Partnership mode. In these, 60% of Class 6 seats are for students already studying there, while 40% are open through AISSEE for boys and girls. A lot of new Sainik Schools do not yet admit girls directly to Class 9.

Sainik School Seats for SC/ST/OBC
Every Sainik School keeps 15% of its seats for Scheduled Caste (SC) students.
- This rule applies to each school separately, and they do not transfer seats from one school to another.
- Example: If a school has 100 seats in Class VI, then 15 seats go to SC students.
- SC students must still pass the AISSEE exam with the minimum cutoff decided by NTA, but they will be selected under the reserved SC category.
Sainik Schools reserve 7.5% of seats for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students.
-
Example: In a 100-seat intake, 7 or 8 seats go to ST candidates.
-
Only ST students who clear AISSEE can get these seats.
-
This rule applies to all ST students in India, no matter which state they belong to.
From 2021, the Government of India added 27% reservation for OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes – Non-Creamy Layer) students in all Sainik Schools, with following points:
-
This follows the Central Educational Institutions Reservation Policy.
-
Only students in the Central OBC list (Non-Creamy Layer) get this benefit, not those in state-only lists.
-
Example: In a school with 100 seats, 27 seats are for OBC-NCL students.

Sainik School Defence Quota
The Defence Quota in Sainik School admission keeps 25% of the seats (after SC, ST, and OBC-NCL reservations) for children of defence personnel. This rule applies in both the Home State/UT quota and the Other State/UT quota. Eligible students include children of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force (serving or retired). If there are fewer defence applicants, the school will give those unfilled seats to other students as per the reservation rules.
