The AISSAC portal will publish Sainik School Waiting List in April/May 2026, which will show the names of candidates who registered for admission but did not secure a seat in the main merit list. The system creates this list before and during the online Sainik School E-Counselling rounds, based on the candidate’s school choices and merit rank.

If seats remain empty after the first allotment and verification, the authorities offer those seats to wait-listed students in strict merit order. Candidates must keep checking updates and quickly finish their documents and medical requirements when the school calls them for admission to the remaining seats.

Order of Filling Unutilised/ Vacant Seats via Sainik School Waiting List

When Sainik School seats remain empty after the main merit list and counselling, the schools fill them step by step according to the Information Bulletin. The order is as follows:

  • If seats are empty in Other States/UT Reserved Categories (SC/ST/OBC-NCL) from List B, the school fills them from the same Reserved Category in the Home State/UT (List A).

  • If seats are empty in Other States/UT General Category (List B), the school fills them from the Home State/UT General Category (List A).

  • If seats are empty in the Defence Category (both Home and Other States/UT, Lists A & B), the school first fills them with children of Coast Guard or Assam Rifles personnel, based on merit, from the school’s waiting list after the Final Merit List comes out.

  • If there are still empty seats in the Other States/UT Defence Category (List B), the school fills them from the Home State/UT Defence Category (List A).

  • If there are still empty seats in the Home State/UT Defence Category (List A), the school fills them from the Home State/UT General Category (List A).

  • If seats are empty in Home State/UT Reserved Categories (SC/ST/OBC-NCL) (List A), the school fills them from Other States/UT Reserved Categories (List B).

  • If any girl seats under a category remain empty, the school may give them to boy candidates of the same category.

If seats remain vacant after all these steps, the school offers them to candidates on the Waiting List of other Sainik Schools. For this, the school announces the number of unfilled seats by category and the cutoff marks of the last admitted candidate. Then, interested candidates from the waiting list of other Sainik Schools can apply. The school admits them based on a combined merit list of these inter-school waiting list candidates.

Difference Between Provisional Waiting List and Single School Choice Waiting List

The Sainik School provisional waiting list keeps students open for all schools with vacancies, while the single school choice waiting list limits them to only one chosen school. The provisional waiting list allows switching to different Sainik Schools as per seat availability, but the single school choice waiting list locks you to a one particular school only. Parents and aspirants can check the major differences between the two below:

Particulars

Sainik School Provisional Waiting List

Single School Choice Waiting List for Sainik Schools

Purpose / Use

After normal counselling, the system makes a list of students who did not get any seats but can still be considered later.

When you choose only one school in the final or spot round, the system makes this list for students who are not admitted immediately.

When Created / Released

The system creates it after the last counselling rounds, before or during spot admission, to show who is still without a seat.

The system creates it during spot admission, after you lock your single school choice.

Scope

It covers all students who are still eligible across many schools. They can get a seat if any school has a vacancy.

It covers only the students who selected that one school. They will not be considered for other schools.

Flexibility / Further Change

If seats open, the system can still move you to different schools as per merit and vacancies.

Once you choose the single school waitlist, you limit yourself to that school only. No more shifting to other schools.

Candidate’s Action Requirement

You do not need to fill out any new choices. The system itself reallocates based on rank and vacancy.

You must actively select and confirm one school during spot counselling to be on this list.

Effect

This list gives you a wider chance. You may get a seat in any school that still has a vacant seat.

This list gives you a chance only in that one chosen school, if seats open there.

In these cases, the school may fill seats from the waiting list.

How is Sainik School Waiting List Used?

Sainik Schools allot unfilled seats to students from the waiting list of Sainik Schools. They follow the order of merit and the rules of each category. This happens after they finish allotting seats to the main merit list students. Sometimes, after the e-counselling rounds, schools upload new Merit Lists from the Waiting List to fill any seats that are still empty in their categories.

If a school still has vacant seats after using its own Waiting List, it may announce these seats to other schools. In such cases, students from the Waiting Lists of other Sainik Schools can apply for those seats.

What Happens if Sainik School Waiting List is Exhausted?

If the waiting list of a Sainik School becomes empty, for example, if students are medically unfit, fail document checks, or decide not to join, the school still does not leave the seats vacant.

The school fills those remaining seats by following the rules for unfilled seats in each category. This means if some reserved seats (like SC, ST, OBC, or Defence) stay empty, the school may either give them to students from the same category in another region (home state or other states) or change those seats into general category seats, depending on the rules.

It is important to know that being on the Waiting List or just passing the AISSEE 2026 exam does not guarantee admission. Admission depends on merit, available seats in each category, and medical fitness.
