You remember when you were a kid, how curious your mind was, that instead of studying, you always looked out of a window, looking at those children playing cricket. And when you used to play cricket, and see a cat passing through, you started following it. That’s how a young, curious mind works. It gets easily distracted by the things happening in its surroundings.

Children in 1990 used to grow up in a very different environment, as life moved at a slower pace, there were few distractions, and sources of entertainment were limited. Most kids used to read books, play, watch TV programs, and interact with family. But compare it with today! Now, children have different types of distractions with many sources of entertainment all around them. Life, especially in cities like Bangalore, moves very fast, and hence, kids nowadays are facing the problem of a shrinking attention span.

The schools in Bangalore realised this thing, and today we will read about one of them, New Oxford School, how they have taken measures, and what other schools can learn from them.

Why Are Attention Spans Shrinking?

Digital habits and distractions affecting children’s focus and learning

Understand that we are living in the digital era where kids are always surrounded by technologies in the form of mobile phones, laptops, tablets, Televisions, video games, and whatnot!

Even the smallest and simplest things, like toys, are no longer simple. In this scenario, you need to understand that if your child is not listening to you while you are telling them to study and they keep getting distracted easily, it is not entirely their fault. They are used to such technologies, and one day if you snatch it all and say to them to study straight for 5 hours, they will end up getting more anxious and frustrated. So the question is, what is the role of schools in this?

How important is the involvement of Schools in this matter?

Shrinking attention spans directly affect a child’s learning experience. Many students struggle to stay focused during long lectures or repetitive learning methods. They may memorise information temporarily, but fail to truly understand concepts. Over time, this can reduce curiosity, classroom participation, and confidence.

This does not mean children are unwilling to learn. In fact, children are naturally curious. The challenge is that traditional one-way teaching methods often fail to compete with the fast-paced digital environment students are exposed to outside school.

This is where modern schools play a very important role. Schools today need to create learning environments that actively involve students instead of expecting them to passively absorb information.

Can Schools Make Learning Interesting Again?

The answer is yes, but it requires balance, innovation, and understanding.

Modern education is no longer only about textbooks and lectures. Students learn better when they are encouraged to participate and ask questions, so that they can explore ideas and connect concepts with real-life experiences. Interactive classrooms, practical learning, storytelling methods, group discussions, experiments, and project-based activities can make learning far more engaging for students.

Technology, when used properly, can also become a powerful educational tool. Smart classrooms, visual demos, applications, and activity-based learning methods help students stay involved and interested. However, technology alone is not the only thing that is required. Schools must also ensure that students continue to develop human skills such as communication, creativity, emotional intelligence, teamwork, and critical thinking.

How New Oxford School(NOS) Sarjapur, Bangalore, is making learning more engaging

A decrease in attention span is common worldwide, and schools, parents, and all are trying to figure it out. One of the schools of Bangalore, New Oxford School, is also in the line to figure out the same. They have come up with certain ideas, like instead of treating shrinking attention spans as a problem to complain about, the school is adapting learning to the attention spans. They have tried to make learning more interactive for students rather than passive.

To do this, they encourage classroom discussions, collaborative projects, activity-based learning, and practical exposure. These things help the candidate stay mentally involved during lessons. The school also understands that every child learns at a different pace; for instance, some students can just read and learn, while others might take hours to learn the same thing. That doesn’t mean their minds are slow; it simply means that they need extra attention and time. Sometimes, the school misses this factor, and that also affects the attention span of the students.

Here are the other ways through which the school tries to enhance the attention span of the child-

  • Learning should be interactive, not passive
  • Students understand concepts better through experiences and activities
  • Technology should support learning, not replace human interaction
  • Creativity and curiosity should be encouraged inside classrooms.
  • It is very important to build an emotional connection between teachers and students.
  • Shorter and engaging learning methods are sometimes more effective than long lectures.

Education is no longer about forcing students; it is more about engaging them. And this can be done at schools and at home by teachers and parents, respectively. The best approach is to have a mutual interaction between these two points so that students can get involved in the best way possible. The more you make the studies engaging, the more will be the chances that children will have a high attention span.
