The Doon School, Dehradun Admission Process

The Doon School’s mission is to recruit India’s exceptional boys who, apart from being strong in academics, will bring character, positive attitudes and talents and interests in fields such as sport, music and cultural activities to the school. We recruit boys from every state in India, Indian nationals from the SAARC countries and Indian nationals from all other parts of the globe. It almost goes without saying that The Doon School’s first priority will be a boy’s ability to cope with our academic curriculum, as well as to contribute strongly to the wider life of our school. In addition to their academic ability and potential, the school looks for qualities in boys that show they will make the very best use of the extraordinary opportunities offered here, in and out of the classroom; and boys who will seek to make their mark in the school, with active and positive participation, and leave a legacy behind them. We want boys not only to benefit themselves from a Doon education but also to add value to the lives of the other boys. The Doon School also wishes each of its boys to be leaders in their communities, their countries and around the world.

The Doon School is very fortunate to have many applicants for both entry classes (Classes VII and VIII) every year, so we are looking for boys with the desire to stretch themselves to the limit. We hope that a boy will serve his school and realize his own potential as he prepares to go on to us to the first class university or college of his choice.

The Doon School is unusual in that new boys are admitted in only two year groups, in Class VII and Class VIII. Please note that no boy will be able to join School after Class VIII for any reason. We do this to ensure that the boys become a closely knit community by the time they pass out from Doon. Registrations open from the day a boy is born. His name may be registered then, or as late as the day before the entrance examination if he decides to sit the entrance examination at the school (or ahead of that date if he sits it at one of the school’s centers outside Dehradun in India). The school does not refund any of the registration fee to candidates who fail to show up on the day of the entrance examination.

Our entrance examination is held in October each year. The non-refundable registration fee is on a sliding scale, so it is much cheaper to register your son for the entrance examination sooner rather than later.

The school makes every effort to keep in regular communication with all of its prospective parents. However, ultimately it is the parent’s responsibility to update the school of any physical location changes or changes of telephone or email details.

The Doon School, Dehradun Leaders Message

Anoop Singh Bishnoi

Anoop Singh Bishnoi

Chairman

It is indeed a great honour and responsibility to chair the Board of Governors for the next five years. I am grateful to members of the IPSS for choosing me to succeed Sunil K Munjal.

The driving force to help in earnest cannot be based on guilt or pressure; but a deep sense of inner gratitude and a sustained wish to help, do whatever little, unconditionally. This deep sense of gratitude emanates from the two-fold test i.e. ability to do and the intention to deliver…thus the wherewithal to have the ability to help/assist co-existing with an inner desire of positivity to work and deliver is where we find ourselves blessed.

Formal education taps latent abilities and opens up an altogether different world. Education has enormous transformative power for any given crisis.

Everyone deserves the best start in life, and that won’t be possible without quality education. If we need our future to be just and sustainable, we have to think collectively. For this gathered effort, education is the strongest tool. Education cannot be restricted to a single period of one’s life. Everyone, beginning with the most marginalized and disadvantaged members of our societies, must be entitled to lifelong learning opportunities for both employment/career perspectives as well as personal knowledge and development.

The school’s mission is to attract and develop exceptional students and teachers from all backgrounds to serve a meritocratic India. The Doon School is an inclusive school that celebrates and embraces diversity. Diversity for us is in terms of geography, socio-economic background, and skill sets.

Differentiated learning and teaching strategies along with an inclusive approach are at the core of the curriculum.

We recognize The Doon School is uniquely different from other legacy schools due to its mission. The school aspires for truly secular and democratic values to serve a meritocratic India.

Academics at The Doon School is a distinguishing characteristic. It challenges the intellect and nurtures the potential of each student to acquire knowledge, concepts, and skills necessary to become thinking, productive, and responsible citizens. Excellence in academics at Doon inculcates lifelong learning in the students.

Sports has been an integral part of The Doon School education. This belief stems from the philosophy that learning occurs both inside the classroom and outside of it. Participation in sports keeps young minds and bodies engaged positively and helps to develop sensorimotor faculties.

Additionally, the co-curricular program is perhaps the soul of The Doon School where the aim is to promote the spirit of exploration, curiosity, character development, team building, building strategies, leadership, individualism, and overall empathy for all. The list of skills that we have is not an exhaustive one. A few examples are resilience, empathy, leadership, integrity, communication, collaboration, etc. The activity program that we offer aims to instil these skills.

At the Doon School, the students are given equal attention in the field of academics, co-curricular and sports activities. This balance while understanding the needs of students is a unique learning experience. To grow in the direction of success, one needs support and assistance, the ability to learn and the indelible passion to deliver. Besides our students we inspire all our other stakeholders, be it the Masters or the Parents to continuously upgrade and be sensitive to our students’ needs, at School and at home. We believe that the student’s most formative years in life are spent at The Doon School. Growth not only physically and intellectually but also psychological and emotional is during the ages 12-18 years. Our aim and hope is that a Doon School student inculcates an exemplary sense of values, the zeal to excel in academics and sports and above all, be a good human being.

Our priority, as has been so of my predecessors, is to ensure a progressive, inspiring, stimulating and above all, a happy environment in school. The Board, the Headmaster and the school management remain committed to this endeavor.
Dr Jagpreet Singh

Dr Jagpreet Singh

Headmaster

There can be no question about the fact that education is the cornerstone of human development, the strongest pillar to ensure the survival of our planet. As a lifelong teacher and an educationist, I have witnessed the marvel of a young mind absorbing a new idea, grasping a new concept or solving a problem. That moment of sudden illumination is almost miraculous to see. It is these moments that create inventors, scientists, artists, writers, leaders and social reformers. At The Doon School, we have been turning out such winners since 1935. Our alumni have been climbing many, many ladders of success in diverse fields all over the world and I have no doubt that the list will grow longer and more illustrious in the years to come.

The reason for this is not far to seek. In our school, we strive to create an optimum blend of academics, sports, extra-curricular activities, personality building, life skills, creativity, analytical thinking and more. All along, we inculcate the finest human and social values in each student, teaching him not just right from wrong, but how to stay on the path of virtue and integrity. We teach the importance of compassion, inclusion and generosity. We help him understand his duties and responsibilities as a citizen and a nation-builder.

Our mission is: To attract and develop exceptional students and teachers from all backgrounds to serve a meritocratic India; inspire them to be just and ethical citizens; train them to be wise and principled leaders; and prepare them to enter one of the strongest alumni fraternities – for life.

The School’s founder S.R. Das, an eminent lawyer, envisioned it to be an institution that would attract students from all sections of society, from every state of India and be completely secular. The only factors that matter are merit and the willingness to learn. The full boarding environment encourages a strong sense of community and helps to develop friendships that will be sustained – and be sustaining – in life beyond the school. Growing up in school teaches the students discipline, self- reliance and independence. They learn to adapt to any situation they may face in life and understand how to assess the personalities and capabilities of others around them. These are invaluable lessons that stand them in good stead all through their lives.

The environment of the school is awe-inspiring. Spread over 70 verdant acres, the school is an oasis of architectural beauty and wide open spaces. Visitors say there is a sense of history in the air and great optimism for the future. The facilities range from the Library and Auditorium to the Art and Media School, the Music School, the Amphitheatre called the Rose Bowl and much more. The sports facilities are extensive, both indoors and outdoors. We have a separate Careers Information, Education and Guidance Department to counsel students to choose the best route in their life after school. The residential Houses and Central Dining Hall keep the boys safe, comfortable and healthy physically, intellectually and emotionally.

Our teaching faculty brings an enviable level of qualifications, experience and commitment. They play the roles of teacher, mentor, counsellor, guide and cheer leader with consummate skill. For them, teaching is not a job, but a calling, in which they grow and evolve to become better every day.

Ask any of our Old Boys and each will have a host of happy memories of their years in School and how their bonds of friendship have strengthened over the decades. Most of them credit the school for their success in life and look back at their alma mater with love and gratitude. What more can The Doon School ask for?

**The Doon School** is a well-known boarding school with a strong focus on overall development, not just academics. You get good exposure, activities, and a competitive peer group. At the same time, it’s expensive, boys-only, and not easy to get into. It works well if you’re comfortable with boarding life and a fairly demanding environment.

The Doon School, Dehradun About Us

Welcome to The Doon School. We are a school which specializes in all boys boarding education for pupils aged 12-18. The school is probably the only ‘All India’ school with applications from almost every state each year, as well as from Indian families overseas. Established in 1935, The Doon School is one of India’s finest schools, with a strong intellectual heartbeat. The Doon School is a full boarding school for boys only and not simply a school which welcomes boarders. The school’s beautiful seventy acre campus with a vast range of flora, fauna and bird life provide all boys with ample green space and fresh air where they are able to live and learn. It is an environment rarely offered by schools in large and small cities in India, or indeed some other countries. All boys are able to seek advice from the teaching staff, the Wellness Centre and the school counsellor living on the school campus throughout the seven day week. Boys discover that they have much more time to study and pursue their wider interests. There is no wasted time travelling to learn Sport, Art, Music, Drama and benefit from Careers Guidance as well as other necessary university and college entrance preparation.

Mission and Vision

Our mission is “To attract and develop exceptional boys and teachers from all backgrounds to serve a meritocratic India; inspire them to be just and ethical citizens; train them to be wise and principled leaders; and prepare them to enter one of the strongest alumni fraternities – for life.”

Our vision is to take The Doon School to its rightful position among the world’s pre-eminent educational institutions for boys aged 12-18 years.

Origin and History

The school’s founder, S. R. Das, was educated at Manchester Grammar School, a highly academic and prestigious all boys’ school founded in 1515 in England. On his return to India, where he served as the Advocate General of Bengal and a member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council of Lord Irwin, he set out to create and establish a school based on the British private boarding school model, but one for Indian boys in India. He wanted them to receive the same educational opportunities he had experienced at Manchester Grammar but without having to leave their home country. S. R. Das aspired to set up a school which was open to all, unlike the majority of the then existing boarding schools that admitted only British pupils and were Christian in ethos, or which served India’s wealthy elites. The Doon School was envisioned as a school that would attract boys from all sections of Indian society, and from every state in India, and would be entirely secular. The Doon School was to specialize in the education of boys who would go on to serve a free and democratic India. The first Headmaster was Arthur Foot, a science master from Eton College. His deputy, John Martyn, who was a Housemaster from Harrow, later became the second Headmaster of the school. Headmaster Arthur Foot believed passionately in the importance of social service and on the first Founder’s Day declared the following in his speech:

“The boys should leave Doon School as members of an aristocracy, but it must be an aristocracy of service inspired by ideas of unselfishness, not one of privilege, wealth or position.”

The school opened in 1935 as an all-boarding institution, and is now home to approximately 500 boys aged 12–18 years. The school is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, north of Delhi. It is set in seventy acres on the site of the original Forestry Research Institute of India, with several species of flora and fauna on the estate; there is a diverse variety of trees on the campus.
