On January 16, 1963 a roving British Leather Technologist, Mr. T. L. Lumb established St. Joseph & Mary’s School, a co-educational School with only 17 students and 5 Teachers. Mrs. Sulekha Goswami became the Principal of the then private, unrecognized institution as Mr. Lumb repatriated to England. Dr. R. K. Mahalanabis, the then professor of Mathematics (Jadavpur University), was offered the chair of the Secretary. As the strength of the students grew in leaps and bounds with time, more number of teachers were recruited and in 1979 school constructed its own building in plot no: 578B, Block-‘N’, NewAlipore. In 1980, the school became affiliated to the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (School Code : WB 042). The following year Prof. (Dr) S. C. Shome, Ex-Principal, Presidency College, Calcutta, was offered the chair of secretary, Mrs. S. Goswami was still the Principal. The school administration consisted of Prof. Dhiresh Bhattacharya, the teacher of Dr. Amartya Sen (Nobel Laureate), Dr. D. Basu, the Ex-Chairman of Science Congress of India, Ex-Chairman of Asiatic Society and Ex-Director of Indian Association for Cultivation of Science as guides. After certain eventuality the total administration changed and Mrs. Sulekha Goswami handed over the reins of administration to Dr. Bhakta Sundar Sharma in 1991. It was by the dint of Dr. Sharma’s courage and administrative efforts that the school was allowed to offer the ISC or Higher Secondary (10+2) curriculum in 1998 in all three streams – Science, Commerce and Humanities and the golden period of the school began to unfold. St. Joseph & Mary’s School is a Government recognized, private, unaided Educational Institution with more than 2500 students. The school is administered by a group of eminent educationists. It is managed by a registered society and possesses a team of highly qualified and dedicated teachers. Under the guidance of Dr. Sharma the school has many remarkable achievements to boast of.
