Dr. Graham's Homes, Kalimpong Admission Process
- The school is now taking applications for admission to Kindergarten up to Class XI There are current vacancies in all classes.Online Application for admission needs to be filled and submitted . Alternatively the form may be obtained from the School Office.
- Candidates seeking admission to Class Xl will be granted provisional admission based on their Class IX progress report and their Class X first semester results. The academic session for Class Xl commences in April.
- For admission to classes other than Kindergarten and Class XI, Entrance Tests/Interviews are held between October and May.
- Parents or guardians are expected to accompany their children for interview during which assessment of aptitude in Maths and English form an important part. The selection process becomes more rigorous according to the age of the child.
- The selection process is normally carried out at the School in Kalimpong. However, for candidates unable to travel to Kalimpong, admission interviews and tests are also administered at the Birkmyre Hostel in Kolkata or at a mutually convenient venue.

Dr. John Anderson Graham

Dr. John Anderson Graham founded these Homes in the year 1900 after having toiled very hard for a couple of years prior to the opening. Who knew, that, a rented cottage as a home for 6 children would eventually grow into the Dr. Graham’s Homes we know today.
Dr. Graham’s Homes is quite unlike any other school. Proudly safeguarding the name of its founder and his ideals, this small island of hope and love looks with confidence to the challenges ahead, while never relinquishing the invisible threads tying it to Reverend Dr. John Anderson Graham’s great dream that led to its birth more than a hundred years ago.
The Homes follows the curriculum prescribed by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, offering both the I.C.S.E. and I.S.C. levels.
The division of streams – Science, Commerce and Humanities – takes place at the IXth standard, according to each child’s individual preference, aptitude, capability and talent.
The year 2024 is very significant as it marks the onset of our Quasquicentennial Celebrations in the year 2025. Together we will be Celebrating 125 years of the Glorious existence of Dr. Graham’s Homes.
As we prepare to celebrate this historic milestone of having cared for, nurtured and educated thousands of children, many from extremely underprivileged backgrounds, we will continue to strive to be the School that cares.
Together we strengthen and build upon the Legacy that our Founders have provided. It is very important that while we evolve, adapt and change to the needs of an increasingly complex world, we continue to do the work this Great Institution was established for.
Dr. Graham’s Homes is not just a School but a complex organization which also provides employment both direct and indirect to large numbers and in turn is the source of sustenance to thousands of people. Apart from providing education we are an economy builder.

A key objective of Dr. Graham’s Homes is to provide its students with a “home away from home” and this is ensured through the unique mechanism of the Cottage System, which has been in place since the School’s inception.There are 21 Cottages across the campus to accommodate the boarders. Some of these date back to the early 1900s and are named after the benefactors who contributed towards building them. Hence names such as Wales Lodge, Mansfield, Elliot, McGregor, Fraser, Bene, Thorburn, Woodburn, Murray etc. One of the core features of the Cottage System is that there is a couple in charge of each Cottage, who play the dual roles of caretaker and parent. Unique to Dr. Graham’s Homes, the Cottage System is not found elsewhere in the country.
The Cottages accommodate students of different age groups. This enables the children to live more like a family with the older children nurturing and caring for the younger ones. It helps children of all ages realise their roles and responsibilities, and they learn to grow up interdependently and to love and care for each other. The Cottage is a place where students come “home” after school and where they can cook in the Cottage kitchen on weekends.
At Dr. Graham’s Homes, children are encouraged to be both independent and interdependent through helping with various household activities like cleaning, washing and cooking. The ambience of each Cottage reflects the warmth and love of a home.
Another unique feature of the Cottage System are the Cottage ‘Uncle’ and ‘Aunty’ who live with the children and are accepted as ‘parents’ by them. After the age of five, children move into the Cottage where they spend the rest of their school life which can extend up to ten years. They identify themselves with their Cottage and build strong emotional bonds with their fellow boarders which often last throughout their lives.
The Cottage System is also the basis for numerous inter-cottage events and competitions. Awards for the best cottage range from sporting events to theatre, singing, elocution, debating and even gardening and the annual award for the “Best All-Round Cottage” is coveted and closely contested.
Conceived by Dr. Graham, this unique system ensures the wholesome development of students and creates an environment that enables them grow up into value-based, responsible citizens. Friendships forged in the Cottage often last a lifetime, beyond school. The system provides for a very strong emotional connect with the Homes and what it stands for.

Spread across 600 acres with the school at its heart, Dr. Graham’s Homes includes numerous departments such as the workshop, farm, estate, bakery, central kitchen, and hospital, all serving the needs of over 1,500 students. The Lucia King Cottage cares for preschool children and infants, while additional facilities include a library, museum, gym, and art room. The Katherine Graham Memorial Chapel adds spiritual serenity, completing the holistic environment that the Homes embodies.
Located atop the scenic hills of Kalimpong, the campus features two football fields, a swimming pool complex, three basketball courts, and ample space for children to play and interact. The unique Cottage System of boarding provides a home-like environment, with seven cottages for girls, ten for boys, and two hostels for senior students. Each cottage houses 35 or more students, where staff are affectionately called ‘Aunty and Uncle,’ and students participate in household chores, motivated by the school motto , “Thorough“.
