OXFORD HOUSE was founded by ‘The Govinda Narayan Chattopadhyay Memorial Trust’ on 2nd April 2001. Dr. Neera Chattopadhyay founded this trust in the memory of her late husband Govinda Narayan Chattopadhyay on September 2000. Dr. Govinda Narayan Chattopadhyay was the first D. Lit in Education from the University of Calcutta and the student of the highly esteemed scientist Dr. Meghnad Saha. An eminent educationist in his own right, Dr. G. N. Chattopadhyay retired as the Director of Education from Tripura, where his contribution has become legendary. Fired with the mission of spreading education among all communities, he founded many primary and secondary schools in Agartala, Tripura. Shiksha Niketan, a Higher Secondary school is one such institution set up by his retirement benefit in Agartala and Dr. Neera Chattopadhyay was the co-founder of that school.
Dr. Neera Chattopadhyay was the principal of JawaharLal Nehru College in Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh and the Head of The Department of Psychology at Maharaja Bir Bikram College in Tripura. On 8th September 2000, a plot of land was selected at Kasba by Dr.Neera Chattopadhyay and her granddaughter and disciple Dr. Nivedita Kundu. This is the site where Oxford House School stands today. The foundation stone was laid by Dr. Chattopadhyay and Dr. Kundu. The school, financed by Dr. Chattopadhyay, developed under the planning and guidance of Dr. Kundu. It began with merely 59 students seated in a hall of about 1000 sq.ft., covered with corrugated tin . The floor was not cemented .There being no tables or chairs, both teachers and students sat on the floor on carpets.
Gradually, the school evolved under Dr. Kundu’s care and supervision to its current dimension. Today, Oxford House School is an impressive 3 storied structure with a carpet area of 4000 sq.ft. Around 700 students, 40 highly qualified teachers and 4 school mothers are being benefitted by this institution. The bond of love and affection between the teachers and students share at Oxford House School is exemplary. Teachers are called monimaas and monikakus emphasising the deep personal connection between the teachers and the pupils.
OXFORD HOUSE the name given by the late Govinda Narayan Chattopadhyay, a co –educational Higher Seconday School, received its affiliation upto Junior High in 2010, High School in 2012, and Higher Secondary in 2013. We are dedicated to providing quality education and strive to instil right beliefs in young minds in our care.
