The initiatives I had taken in my tenure in Uttarakhand are simply a reflection of my deep and abiding faith in the decency and dignity of the ordinary citizen. More than 5000 children and adults have undergone cleft lip and cleft palate surgery free of cost 450 home toilets have been constructed in village homes at a total cost of Rs.22 lakhs. Dehradun today has India’s most modern centrally air-conditioned four storeyed Blood Bank. 160 Tsunami affected children have received financial support for their sustenance and education for three years. These are some of the projects undertaken and accomplished.
The economic compulsions on account of abject poverty have drawn the attention of women away from providing moral strength and courage to their daughters turning to mundane responsibilities like tilling the field, gathering fodder and collecting precious drinking water. The girl child is looked down upon as a service provider rather than a potential bread winner. In such a scenario, the priorities of education diminish, often shutting out opportunities even for the best girls.

Our founder, Late Shri Sudarshan Agarwal, wanted to build not just a school, but a training ground for life. This encapsulates the true essence of what the Him Jyoti School has worked to build since its inception in 2005. Him Jyoti School has become a model for providing quality education to underprivileged children in Uttarakhand.
In its truest commitment, Him Jyoti is giving students the wings to fly and build the courage to become the people they aspire to beꟷ to ‘dream on, dream bigger and bolder.’
I am proud to be part of the Him Jyoti family and deeply thankful to the students, teachers, and pastoral staff, all of whom are dedicated to the singular idea of building an institution that creates a lasting transformation in lives around them. I have personally experienced the metamorphosis of these young students, who have become resilient and confident individuals after undergoing the academic and non-academic rigor that the school provides. After spending 7-8 years at Him Jyoti, the school has become their home and has contributed to their holistic growth.
The Him Jyoti family has continued to grow with an ever-expanding pool of successful alumni, volunteers and donors who come from all walks of life. Our donors constitute NRIs, individuals, corporates and CSR groups who dedicate their time, effort and skills towards the growth of students and teachers. It is through their continued patronage that Him Jyoti students had the opportunity to participate in an international student exchange program in the UK. Students have also gained access to mobile apps for contemporary needs, such as Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and learn English language skills. We are grateful to our donors for their unyielding support and sponsorship of the school and thousands of students who have benefitted because of them.

Him Jyoti School is the fruition of the noble thought of promoting girls’ education in Uttarakhand as envisaged by Late Shri Sudarshan Agarwal.
Founded in 2005, Him Jyoti School has carved a niche for itself as the only free residential institution with state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities providing education to the bright girls of Uttarakhand.
A measure of its success is the short span in which the organisation has grown from strength to strength.
A school imparts knowledge to children, develops their skills, instils in them sound values, and nurtures their curiosity for lifelong learning. It sets the context for their future learning, and prepares them to be self-motivated and self-directed learners. Him Jyoti School, Dehradun About Us
We are a social transformation program working relentlessly with the purpose of empowering girls from remote areas of Uttarakhand. The girls come from economically deprived sections of society and face the disparity in educational facilities that exists between India’s cities and remote areas.
We believe that with a focus on “free” quality education, holistic development, and exposure to opportunities, the girls will get the wings to fly and dream bigger and bolder! We are providing the girls with the platform to develop their potential and give back to their communities.
Him Jyoti School started as the dream of our Founder Late Shri Sudarshan Agarwal Ji (Former Governor of Uttarakhand and Sikkim). From 40 students and 2 teachers in 2005 in a small, rented facility, the school has now grown to 280 girls from Classes 5 to 12 and 25 teachers, with free boarding for girls and residences for the teachers.
