Increase Focus in Preschoolers

Parents can help their children increase focus in many ways. Incorporating these tips will help your child build habits and rules that make it easier to focus and become less restless.

  1. Break the task into smaller ones:  A big task can seem daunting to a child. Create smaller projects out of the big task. Completing each project will give a sense of achievement to the child, motivating him to attempt the next one.

  2. Make it child’s play: It’s simple, children love to play. I also believe that children are meant to learn while playing. If something can be taught in a fun way, there is nothing wrong in using it. Too many tasks can tire little brains, so mixing play and work makes it interesting enough for them to want to focus.

  3. Provide a calm work environment: Unless they are engaged in something they love doing, most kids will lose focus on the tiniest of distractions. Have a separate area where they do their studies/homework, keep the television, cell phones etc. out of that place. Keep the area neat, tidy and organized.

  4. Keep a timer: This works very well with a lot of my kids. Setting the timer on for task completion helps them shift their focus from distractions to finishing the job within the time limit. Time limits can vary from a minute to 20 minutes, depending on the age and capacity of the child.

  5. Ensure exercise: Exercise helps kids channelize excess energy, become less restless and more focussed.

  6. Have a good routine: Setting a routine makes a habit out of certain activities and requires less effort in focusing. Doing the homework at the same time daily is a good idea.

  7. Space out activities: Some children can take time to switch on and off between two activities. Giving adequate time to transition from one activity to another, helps them prepare their mind to focus on the next activity.

  8. Use games that build concentration: Simple games like jigsaw puzzles, memory, Uno, and spot the differences can actually improve attention for words, numbers and pictures.

  9. Ensure proper rest: Ensure that their mind and body are properly rested before starting work that requires focus.

  10. Breathing Exercises: Teach them breathing exercises so that there is enough oxygen supply to the brain, helping them concentrate better.

  11. Assign simple responsibilities: Making kids responsible for simple chores helps them build focus. Keeping their toys in order, or setting the table before a meal, can be simple activities that teach them to focus.

  12. Encourage the habit of reading books: Reading is a great way to enhance listening skills and focus. So the bedtime routine of snuggling up with your child for a good read does a lot more than just provide affection.

Most importantly, a parent must have a constructive attitude towards the problem. Making your child feel they are any less because they cannot pay attention, is only going to take them two steps backwards rather than forward.
