Extracurricular Activities for kids

Extracurriculars are the activities that you perform outside the classroom. These activities could be music, art, dance, sports or any other activity that does not include studies. Parents nowadays pay huge attention to their children's academic performance. They even ask their children to leave their extracurriculars so that they can concentrate on studies.

Extracurricular activities play a big role in shaping your kids. They help in developing your child's personality as well as builds new doors of opportunity for them. In India, extracurriculars are not given much importance as considered to academics. Parents are seen resisting their kid's participation in such activities instead of supporting them.

Here are some reasons why extracurricular activities are important for every child:-

  •  Confidence and Personality Development - Extracurriculars help in building confidence. When a student starts performing such activities he starts believing in himself and his abilities that gives him confidence. When a person becomes confident his personality becomes attractive and people start liking their character. Confidence also encourages them to try new things and talk to new people without any fear. Self-esteem is one's greatest ability that helps them succeed in life.

  • Improving Academic Performance - Yes, you read it right! it helps in improving academics. Many parents resist these activities as they think this will distract them from their studies but actually, participating in such activities improves your brain function and helps you concentrate and manage your time better. It makes you more disciplined. All this plays an important role in good academic performance.

  • Builds Opportunity - Most of the successful people whom we follow are not necessarily academically good but their talent is what got them success. Actors, sports stars, businessmen, dancers all of them are successful because of their talent and not studies. So it may be possible that your child has such talent as well. Participating in different activities will build opportunities for them to achieve something higher apart from the field of academics.

  •  Essential Life Skills - Field of education makes you but the field of life shapes you. Extracurricular helps you prepare for the field of life by teaching you some of the greatest life skills like goal setting, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, public speaking, leadership, and analytical thinking.

  • Resumes - Without previous work experience, one of the only ways of hiring is to assess your abilities, work ethic and what you have done in your life so far, how much participative you are and how many fields know about other than studies. All these things are judged by their participation in extracurricular activities.

  • University Admissions - Many universities have sports quota and ECA ( extracurricular activities) quota that helps children with low grades to get admission based on their extracurricular skills. Even if your child has secured fewer grades his extracurricular or sports participation can help him in getting admissions in prestigious universities.

  •  Explore Interests and Talent - When your child performs different activities he gets to know what is his field of interest or what capabilities he/she is amassing. Every person has some talent and extracurricular help to identify that talent and chase it by further participation in competitions.

Some things to avoid while participating in extracurriculars:-

  • Don't include yourself in too many activities. This will make you busier, you won't be able to spare time for studies and trying to stand on every boat makes you lose all of them. Participate in only 1 or 2 activities so that you can devote your 100% to them.

  • Don't spend too much time in extracurriculars. You should prepare a timetable where you give equal importance to both studies and extracurriculars so that your grades don't suffer.

  • Don't stress yourself when you are not able to perform well. When you participate in something, you become passionate about it and all you want to do is to win in it. When you are not able to perform well you start burning out and harm yourself mentally. Try not to get over passionate about anything and don't take stress about winning or losing, just enjoy every bit of it.
