Eligibility Criteria and Admission Process for Schools in Delhi

Delhi’s school admissions, especially for Nursery, KG, and Class 1, are regulated by the Directorate of Education (DoE) through a centralised, points-based mechanism. Let us take a look at the different components of the admission process for Delhi schools in detail.

The DoE Point System (For Nursery/KG/Class 1)

According to the point system, every student is allocated points based on different criteria, usually out of 100, with a certain cutoff point. The higher the points, the higher the chances of securing admission.

Here's a common list of criteria on which students are usually evaluated in Delhi schools:

  • Distance from School: Points are allotted based on how far the student lives from the school locality.
  • Siblings: Sibling points are allotted if any of their siblings are currently enrolled in that specific school.
  • Alumni: Alumni points are allotted if any of the parents was a student of the same school.

In case multiple applicants have the same point score, schools usually conduct a draw of lots (lottery system) to decide admissions. Parents can use the points calculator on Ezyschooling to determine their child’s points according to the points specified in the schools that they have applied to.

Age  Criteria For Delhi School Admissions

Delhi schools follow a strict age criteria for admission, as specified by DoE and in accordance with NEP 2020. The new age criteria, announced recently by the DoE, state that a child must be a minimum of 3 years old by March 31st of the year in which admission is sought.

While the age criteria makes considerable changes to the foundational framework (breaking KG to LKG and UKG and implementing a 6+ years age criteria for admission to Class 1), the DoE has made it clear that the transition will happen gradually, with the new structure starting in 2026-27 and that existing students will not be affected.

For the 2026-27 session, the age structure to be followed is as follows:

  • Nursery: 3 years and above
  • KG: 4 years and above
  • Class I: 5 years and above

For admission to higher classes, the guideline is straightforward: each class typically requires the child to be one year older than the previous.

Documents Required for Delhi School Admissions

Here is a list of the important documents required for Delhi school admissions:

  • Passport-size pictures of the child and parents, at least 2 of each
  • A print-out of the filled application form, just in case
  • A family photo consisting of the parents and the child
  • Proof of residence, any two of the following should be kept ready:
    • Ration/Smart Card issued in the name of parents (Mother/Father, having the name of the child)
    • Domicile certificate of the child or his/her parents
    • Voter I-Card (EPIC) of any of the parents
    • The latest paid Electricity bill/MTNL telephone bill/Water bill/Passport in the name of any of the parents or child
    • Aadhaar Card/UID card issued in the name of either of the parents
  • Birth Certificate, for proof of age
  • Tuition fee receipt of the applicant’s sibling, in case you are applying via the sibling quota
  • Proof regarding parents being alumni of the school, for those applying via the alumni criteria

EWS / DG / CWSN Category Admissions

Schools in Delhi reserve 25% of entry-level seats (Pre-School to Class 1);

  • 22% for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Disadvantaged Groups (DG)
  • 3% for Children with Special Needs (CWSN)

EWS school admissions in Delhi are open to children from families with an annual income of less than ₹5 lakh.

How to Choose the Best School in Delhi for your Child?

Choosing the right school in Delhi is one of the most important decisions parents make. Unlike other cities, Delhi admissions follow a government-regulated process that uses a point system for selection and often includes a lottery. This makes planning and school selection even more critical.

Here’s a detailed checklist to help parents make an informed decision:

  • Understand Your Child’s Needs: Choose a school that matches your child’s learning style and personality. Some children thrive in structured, academically rigorous schools like DPS, while others flourish in progressive environments like The Mother’s International. If your child needs personal attention, prefer schools with a low student–teacher ratio (around 10:1 or 15:1).
  • Curriculum Choice Matters: Delhi offers CBSE, ICSE, IB, and Cambridge boards, each with its own strengths. CBSE is ideal for competitive exam preparation, ICSE balances academics with strong English skills, while IB/Cambridge are globally recognized and inquiry-driven. Select the board that aligns with your child’s future academic and career plans.
  • Distance & Point System Advantage: Proximity is the most heavily weighted criterion in Delhi admissions. In adherence to the point system in Delhi, most schools award 70 points for applicants within 0-5 km, 50 points for 5-10 km, and proportionately lower points beyond that, as published in their criteria on the DoE website.
  • Holistic Development Focus: Look for schools that balance academics with sports, arts, and extracurricular activities. A strong annual calendar with events, competitions, and student councils shows the school values all-round growth. Facilities like playgrounds, labs, and cultural programs indicate commitment to holistic development.
  • Safety & Security: Safety should be non-negotiable when shortlisting schools. While taking a tour:
    • Test gate security; attempt an unannounced visit and see how staff respond.
    • Check if the school has CCTV surveillance, verified bus drivers, GPS-enabled transport.
    • Review hygiene standards, inspect washrooms in multiple blocks.
  • Fee Structure & Transparency: Review the complete fee structure, including tuition, development charges, transport, and annual costs. Confirm how much the fees may rise each year since DoE rules cap increases without approval. Ask about scholarships, sibling discounts, or flexible payment options.
  • Reputation & Reviews: Speak to parents and check Ezyschooling or Google reviews to get genuine feedback. Look for consistent praise or complaints rather than one-off opinions. Also consider board results, alumni success, and the school’s track record in co-curricular achievements.
  • Visit & Observe: Visiting the school is the best way to understand its culture. Observe classroom interactions, staff responsiveness, and overall discipline. Walk through campus areas to check cleanliness, safety, and how welcoming the school feels.

Note: The term “best school” is highly subjective and can vary based on each child’s learning needs, family values, lifestyle, and academic goals. Instead of chasing rankings or popularity, parents should focus on finding a school that aligns with their child’s interests, emotional well-being, and long-term development goals.

Our Ranking Methodology (2025-26)

At Ezyschooling, our rankings are built on the understanding that the definition of the “best” boarding school varies from family to family. To ensure relevance and objectivity, our 2025–26 rankings are based on a multi-criteria evaluation framework that reflects both academic excellence and broader developmental priorities, such as infrastructural facilities, teachers and quality of teaching, parental interest, ratings and reviews, etc.

Our 2025-26 internal rankings are based on:

  • Location Factor: We specifically consider the aerial distance of schools located within and around an 8 km radius from the central coordinates of Delhi. While parents may be open to exploring slightly farther options for the right fit, we give additional weight to schools that are closer to the central location, ensuring that convenience and connectivity are taken into account in our listings.
  • Academic Record: We prioritize schools with consistently strong board exam results (CBSE, ICSE, IB, or state boards) over the past 3 to 5 years. Schools affiliated with nationally/internationally recognized boards (like CBSE, ICSE, or IB) are weighted higher for their structured curricula and global relevance.
  • Infrastructural Facilities: The campus size, quality of classrooms, availability of specialized facilities such as labs (robotics, science, computer, etc), swimming pools, indoor and outdoor sports complexes are also considered.
  • Emphasis on Holistic Development: Schools are also assessed based on their commitment to holistic development and the availability of extracurricular activities. Schools that offer a balance of extracurricular activities, sports, life skills programs, and creative pursuits are prioritized more.
  • Teachers and Quality of Teaching: Student-teacher ratio is a key metric. We also assess teacher qualifications, training programs, and retention rates. Schools that encourage innovative teaching methods over rote memorization score higher.
  • Parental Interest & Engagement: At Ezyschooling, we track key indicators like profile views, clicks, and frequent inquiries to gauge parent interest in a school. Time spent on a school profile and scheduled school visits reflect satisfaction, helping us identify schools that genuinely connect with families.
  • Ratings and Reviews: We track authentic parent feedback regarding the school through ratings and reviews submitted on Ezyschooling, as well as those available on other public domains.

Please Note: This is not an official ranking. However, we do assign and regularly update internal ranks to schools based on the weightage of the key factors mentioned above, thus serving parents with schools that score highly on our matrix.

How We Gather & Verify Data

Information is gathered from official school websites (especially Mandatory Disclosures), data provided by partnered schools, education board portals (CBSE, CISCE/ ICSE, IB, IGCSE/ Cambridge), government databases(Know Your School and UDISE+), parent feedback, site visits (wherever feasible) as well as analysis of public domain data, verified and cross-referenced with school authorities as of September 2025  by our team of education experts.

We prioritize transparency by:

  • Regular Updates: Refreshing data regularly to reflect new schools, fee revisions, curriculum changes, classes offered, admission status and more school-related data.
  • Verification Process: Cross-checking critical details (e.g., fees, facilities, board affiliations, etc.) with multiple sources, as listed above.
  • User Feedback: Encouraging schools and parents to suggest corrections or additions via query@ezyschooling.com.
