As a parent, it is a joy for us to see our kids excel in anything. But do you know that you are your child’s biggest cheerleader? Your direction can take them to new heights of success. Here are ways to motivate your child to give her best in whatever she does:
Goal Setting: Discuss with your child what she really likes doing. Have a long term goal with regard to that activity. Then, break down the long term goal into a set of short term goals that are achievable but will challenge the limits of your child.
Ensure the Child is Interested: The fire to excel has to come from within your child. That will only happen when she is genuinely passionate about what she is doing. Make sure that the activity chosen is liked by your child. Pressurizing her to engage in something that she doesn’t feel passionate about is only going to make her feel upset.
Celebrate Victories Together: Have a small ritual of celebrating each time your child marks an improvement or accomplishes her short term goals. Treat them to something special or reward them sometimes.
Healthy Competition: Healthy competition encourages a child to give out their best. Motivate them to bring home the trophy at the running race competition or poetry recital.
Have Faith: Trust that your child is giving her best. In times of a setback, stand by her and tell her there is always the next time. Failure is only a stepping stone to success. Never let it demotivate her.
Take Interest: Take a genuine interest in your child’s activities, learn about them so you can contribute when the kid needs help. Be a partner they can count on.
Peer Pressure: A little bit of peer pressure is fine to have and in fact good to push their limits.
Be in the Company of the Best: Show them the best works in their field chosen so they can set their benchmarks high. For example, if a painting is what your child loves to do, show her works of great artists, get her to be part of a painting group in your city. Seeing others work passionately will motivate her to do so too.
Enjoy the Process: No matter what, always enjoy the journey towards the goal. Fretting along the way will only make the process dull and boring.
Here’s wishing you and your child every success in their endeavours.
