Stay Safe Stay Healthy

Most young parents of the current generation must have been teenagers and experienced the swine flu pandemic from close quarters in 2009. Recently originating from a different part of the world, but only ten years apart from the preceding pandemic, COVID-19, or the coronavirus pandemic, has been spreading across countries at devastating speed, with the death toll rising almost exponentially in several regions.

Lockdown of cities, shutting down of corporates and companies, suspension of all sports events, closing down of universities and schools, disruption of air and road travel  – the worldwide call for social distancing to prevent the spread of the disease has brought the world to a standstill. “We are facing a global health crisis unlike any in the 75-year history of the UN – one that is killing people, spreading human suffering and upending people’s lives”, said the United Nations in a public report. The current pandemic seems to be on its way to upstage the damage done by the one before it.

No doubt every person is aware of the basic safety measures of social distancing and avoidance of respiratory contact by wearing face masks. To make life easier for you, here are some suggestions for the same:-

  1. Starting with the most basic suggestion, it is highly essential that you should wash your hands thoroughly with soap and take a bath once you return home in case you need to go for an errand outside. Even if you feel that you don’t need to do so since you didn’t touch any external material, it’s best not to take risks. You might have touched something unconsciously.
  2. The lockdown has forced us to be confined to our homes, necessitating the need for online deliveries – be it readymade food or groceries. During such situations, it’s best if we use the “no contact” option in which the delivery boy places the product outside your house, and leaves without any direct contact with you. In case you are forced to come in contact, ensure that you have adequate protective equipment along with you. Or the best option, don’t order anything! Control your exotic test buds for at least a few weeks.
  3. In case you buy packed food products, ensure that you make a solution with water and soap and rinse them in that liquid. Leave them out to dry for a few hours.
  4. Most of us cannot live without a daily dose of newspapers. But under current circumstances, it is recommended that you leave the newspaper roll untouched for a day or two. Or even better, don’t read print editions for the time being. All well-established newspapers have online editions on their website. A published newspaper passes through a chain of numerous hands between the printing press and your doorstep. It’s a risk best not taken.

We are currently in an extraordinary situation and we need to see it that way. Shedding one’s own tastes and preferences is not a big deal, especially when it’s our own life that is at stake.
