Government to lay stress on using mother tongue as a medium of instruction

The Centre has told the Supreme Court to lay stress on providing education in home language/mother-tongue, in accordance to The National Curriculum Framework (NFC) of 2005, Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, and National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.
This action was taken by The Union Ministry of Education in response to a notice issued by the top court on an appeal by the Andhra Pradesh government that challenged the High Court's decision of making English medium compulsory for classes 1 to 6 in government schools for 2020-21 academic session.
The NFC, as mentioned in an affidavit, also states "home language(s) of children…should be medium of instruction in schools”. The Centre reconfirmed the Supreme Court that Section 29(2)(f) of RTE Act says that “medium of instruction shall, as far as possible, be in child’s mother tongue”.

If the schools do not have the provision to provide education to the children in the home language(s) at higher levels, the primary levels must still be covered through home language(s).
