Benefits of Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha means "smell of the horse” in Sanskrit, which refers to both its unique smell and ability to increase strength. Its botanical name is Withania somnifera, and it’s also known by several other names, including Indian ginseng and winter cherry. The ashwagandha plant is a small shrub with yellow flowers that's native to India and North Africa. It has been used as one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda and is classified as an adaptogen, meaning that it can help your body manage stress. Ashwagandha also provides numerous other benefits to your body.

The following are the benefits of the Ashwagandha herb:

  1. Anti-inflammatory: Ashwagandha has a high concentration of withanolides, which fight inflammation and tumor growth. The herb increases natural killer cell activity and decreases markers of inflammation.

  2. Blood sugar level: It can reduce blood sugar levels in both healthy people and those with diabetes.

  3. Anticancer properties:  Withaferin — a compound in ashwagandha — helps induce apoptosis, which is the programmed death of cancer cells. It also impedes the growth of new cancer cells. Hence it may help treat several types of cancer, including breast, lung, colon, brain, and ovarian cancer.

  4. Cortisol levels: Cortisol is a hormone that is released in response to stress, as well as when blood sugar levels get too low. Ashwagandha can help reduce cortisol levels.

  5. Stress and anxiety: Ashwagandha is best known for its ability to reduce stress.

  6. Depression: Ashwagandha may help alleviate depression.

  7. Testosterone and male fertility: Ashwagandha supplements have powerful effects on testosterone levels and reproductive health. It helps increase testosterone levels and boosts sperm quality and fertility in men.

  8. Muscle mass and strength: Ashwagandha can increase muscle mass, reduce body fat, and increase strength in men.

  9. Cholesterol: Ashwagandha can help improve heart health by reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Hence it can reduce the risk of heart disease.

  10. Brain function: Ashwagandha has traditionally been used to boost memory in Ayurvedic medicine.  Ashwagandha supplements can improve brain function, memory, reaction time, and the ability to perform tasks.

Ashwagandha has been used for its medicinal properties for centuries in India. It has a variety of health benefits. Supplementing with ashwagandha may be an easy and effective way to improve health. However, it should be taken after consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner regarding the dosage.
