After all, India has around 15 lakh schools, more than 97 lakh teachers, and more than 26.5 crore students, all of these just at the school level alone. And all of these are from varied backgrounds, thus creating assimilation in terms of learning. As of 2022, India is known to have a whopping total of 14,89,115 schools, yes, that’s more than 14 lakhs. These schools are divided into different types on the basis of the level of education, like primary, secondary, etc., and also on the basis of gender specifics, that is, girls-only schools, boys-only schools, and co-educational schools.

If you examine the above table closely, you will notice a downward trend in the number of schools in India after 2018. Prior to that, there had been a significant increase in the number of schools, especially as it shot up to 15,58,903 in 2017 from 15,18,160 in 2014. The downward trend, however, does not indicate a negative standard of education. The decrease in the number of schools, in fact, was a result of the amalgamation of schools across India. This downward trend, however, came to a stop in 2021, as the number of schools increased to 15,09,136, while it had only been 15,07,708 in the year 2020. Then again in 2022, the number of schools stands at 14,08,115, due to the amalgamation of schools across the country.
Schools in India are sprawled across the rural and urban regions of the country. According to the latest UDISE+ report of 2021-22, Urban India is home to 2,54,327 schools, while the number of rural schools in India in 2022 is 12,34,788.

The latest UDISE+ report of 2021-22 mentions that 11,96,265 schools in India are primary schools. It is also worth mentioning here that primary education in India has been made free and compulsory for all children aged 6 to 14, by the 86th Amendment to the Indian Constitution in the year 2002.
80.3% of schools in India are primary schools. Primary schools in India constitute Primary and Upper Primary divisions.
Uttar Pradesh has the most number of primary schools, which is 10,02,382. Chandigarh, on the other hand, has only 60 primary schools and thus becomes the state with the least number of primary schools.
1,50,452 schools in India are secondary schools. Secondary schools mostly act as an intermediary between primary and higher schooling.
10.1% of schools in India are secondary schools. Most of the time, secondary schools are also amalgamated with higher secondary schools.
With 17,741 schools, Maharashtra becomes the state having the maximum number of secondary schools. Meanwhile, the state has the minimum number of secondary schools in Chandigarh, with only 71 secondary schools.
1,42,398 schools in India are higher secondary schools. Higher secondary schools consist of classes IX to XII.
The percentage of higher secondary schools in India is 9.6%. Higher secondary schools that consist of only classes XI and XII are also referred to as junior colleges in most parts of India.
Rajasthan is home to the maximum number of higher secondary schools, which are 20,631 in number. Meanwhile, Chandigarh has only 102 higher secondary schools, which is the least in any state.

As per the latest government report for 2022, the total number of private schools in India stands at 3,40,753. The term private schools is used to refer to schools that are run by independent bodies and organisations, without any kind of aid from the government.
A large portion of students in India attends private schools. Many parents seem to prefer private schools over government schools as they believe that private schools are better engaged in educating their children as compared to government schools. This is backed by the Annual Status of Education Report which mentioned that 77% of the students enrolled in government schools are not able to solve simple divisional problems and 56% of them cannot eleven read a basic paragraph from younger-level textbooks.
However, in addition to the independent private schools, there are also some private schools that are run with some help from the government. Such private schools are termed to be government-aided schools.

The percentage of private schools in India is 22.6%. This is quite a meagre portion when compared to the presence of government schools in India.

Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of private schools in India, which is 97,808. Out of these, 74,471 are primary schools, 8,977 are secondary schools and 14,360 are high schools. Rajasthan acquires second place when it comes to having the maximum number of private schools, as it has a total of 34,826 private schools.

The latest UDISE+ report states that the total enrollment of students from primary to higher secondary levels of education was more than 25.38 crore in 2020-21. Out of these, 13.17 crore were boys, while 12.21 crore were girls. This is a notable increase, almost of 28 lakhs, from 2019-20.

As stated in the latest UDISE+ report, the Gross Enrollment Ratio in primary schools has increased from 101.3% in 2018-19 to 103.3% in 2020-21 and then to 103.39% in 2021-22. Similarly, the Gross Enrollment Ratio of upper primary schools has registered a notable growth as it has increased to 94.67% in 2021-22, while it was only 92.2% in 2020-21.
For secondary schools, the Gross Enrollment Ratio stands at 79.56 in 2021-22 while it was 79.8% as per the UDISE+ report for 2020-21. The GER for secondary schools was only 76.9% in 2018-19.
The Gross Enrollment Ratio is the lowest at the higher secondary level, as compared to the other levels of school education. The GER in 2018-19 was only 50.14%. However, the GER increased to 53.8% in 2020-21 and then to 57.56 as per the latest UDISE+ report for 2021-22, depicting an impressive growth curve.

The latest UDISE+ report mentions that the Net Enrollment Ratio of girls at the primary level is 93.83, while that for boys is 91.63. Similarly, the Net Enrollment Ratio for girls and boys at the upper primary level is 74.55 and 73.6, respectively. The Net Enrollment Ratio of girls at the secondary level drops to 52.39 and is 52.6 for boys. The Net Enrollment Ratio is lowest at the higher secondary levels, as can be evidently seen in the graph below.
