Raising a Happy Child with High Self-Esteem

Self-esteem can be defined as how positively one views himself or herself. It's the quality of feeling good about oneself and valuing one's abilities. High levels of self-esteem can inculcate confidence, competence and healthy assertiveness among children. Happiness and self-esteem are deeply interrelated. High self-esteem leads to happiness whereas high levels of general happiness lead to high self-esteem.

When it comes to children, building high self-esteem and a happy outlook is of great significance. It creates capable problem-solvers who are likely to succeed and achieve personal goals. Children who have high self-esteem and are cheerful in general grow up to be confident and capable adults.

In a study by researchers of Aix-Marseille University, France and Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, it was found that happy children have high life satisfaction and emotional well-being as adults.

This is what parents can do to help improve their child's self-esteem and keep them happy and joyful!

Raising a happy child with high self-esteem

  • Help your child learn new things: By introducing your child to a variety of skills, places or activities, you are infusing an appreciation for diversity. Additionally, this will help your child find things that he or she enjoys. It might even make your child aware of the fact that he or she can not do everything perfectly and that it is alright.
  • Become good role models: Children learn about the world by copying the adults around them. If the parents are confident and happy, the child is bound to feel the same. By doing your best to be a good role model for your child, not only will you improve the child's environment but you will also create a prototype of acceptable behaviour for the child.
  • Don't give harsh criticism: Children are incredibly sensitive to what adults around them say or do. If the adults criticise a child harshly or generalise something about his or her behaviour, the child will likely start believing that to be the truth. Instead of criticising a child, like "you are stupid" or "why can't you do anything right?", try to pinpoint the areas that need help and give suggestions like "let's try doing this another way". Although children are young, they understand simple reasoning, you may try to patiently explain to a child why certain behaviours are undesirable.
  • Focus and encourage on the child's strengths: When a parent encourages a child's abilities and strengths, it makes the child feel supported and loved. Furthermore, the improvement experienced by the child will boost his or her confidence. This way, the child will be more willing to try new things and do his or her best in everything.
  • Encourage independence: Children are often unconsciously aware of their dependence on the adults around them. Encouraging your children to be independent in a safe environment may make them realise that they're capable. This will boost their self-esteem and make them happier.

Lastly, spend fun-filled moments together with your child. Happy memories lead to a boost in mood whenever recalled. Simply spending time with your children will make them feel loved and appreciated.

How the School you Choose can Help!

Today, children spend more than half of their day in school. While parents can ensure that the home environment encourages the child's self-esteem and happiness, the same can not be said for all schools.
