Sofa Causing body Ache

With the nationwide lockdown in place for the past three months, offices have shifted online, and work meetings have moved from conference tables and chairs to platforms like Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc. While it’s certainly more comfortable to work from home via your beds and sofas and dining tables, sitting in the same position for hours can have an adverse impact on your body, and even lead to issues like body pain. Here are some suggestions to bring relief from this complication: -

  1. Keep changing your position regularly. Don’t stay static at one place for more than an hour. You might get comfortable at one spot- say the sofa, and forget all about shifting positions. In this case, keep alarms with hourly intervals.
  2. Don’t position yourself in an unconventional or unorthodox posture – like reclining on your back, putting your feet above the table, placing your body against your shoulder. These will cause you discomfort and pain after the meeting. Always maintain a well-balanced posture.
  3. Take multiple breaks and move around the house. It’s even better if you have a terrace at home, where you can walk around and take in some fresh air. For those who don’t have one, walk up to your balcony or go to the kitchen and cook something up or make a cup of coffee.
  4. Exercise early in the morning for about half an hour. Yoga is also a good option. They will increase your flexibility and improve your blood circulation. This will ensure that your body maintains more endurance throughout the day.

The fundamental issue here is that we forget to keep these precautions in mind because the resultant body pain doesn’t occur during the meeting, and makes its presence known only a few hours after the meeting, by which it is too late. You need to keep reminders in the form of written notes or phone alarms to ensure that you remain conscious about this issue. If you do end up experiencing pain, the only option is to take a short break from work for a couple of days until the pain subsides. And no matter how important your work is, when equated with your health, the latter will should always precede the former in priority.
