First Day at School

Starting pre-school is a major milestone and it comes with big emotions for both you and your child. It’s normal and healthy for a child to take time adjusting to school. This transition is sometimes called separation anxiety and can be unsettling to parents but it's natural for your toddler or pre-scholar to express sadness over being separated from you for an extended time. As a child gets used to being without parents in a new environment, separation anxiety can show itself in several ways.

So, how do we help our child get through his/her first day blues and how do schools do to help?

• The Academic Coordinator of Billabong High International School, Noida says that - “It is important for parents to explain the routines of preschool to their child. Tell your child about the games he'll play, the kids he'll meet, the things we’ll learn and remind him  that you’ll come back to pick him up. Try not to overhype school, and don’t make promises about things you can’t control such as making a huge group of friends.”

• Most schools hold an orientation day to allow the children to familiarize themselves with the school and peers. And if you’re worried for your child because he is transferring to a new school mid-semester, the school usually assigns a class representative to introduce the students to the school and their classmates.

• Billabong High International School, Noidaactively tries to get your child involved with the activities of his environment. They acknowledge a Childs feeling and give him time to deal with his emotions. This means, the teacher will comfort the child by holding his hand, hugging him, rubbing his back or inviting him to sit with the teacher for a while.

• Mrs. Gauri Seth, a primary teacher with over32 years of experience shares a quick suggestion to help you ease your child’s anxiousness “Share one meal a day together as a family. This will give you a chance to share a conversation with your child about how his experience and how he’s feeling. By making this a daily routine, your child will comfortable to talk about his day to you of his own accord”

The first days of school comes with a wide range of emotions for both you and your child and it may seem impossible to deal with but keep calm and don’t worry about the first day blues, it’ll be over before you know it!
