Travelling with kids

Travelling with kids can be a different ball-game altogether. The first time I did so with my son, I was in for a shock when I realised just how many bags were needed to pack his stuff. Gone were the days of carrying a back pack and taking off on a trip. But over time and several trips later, I have realised that with a little bit of careful planning, travelling with your kids can be so much fun!

Here’s a checklist which will help you plan better:

Before the Trip

  •  A few hours before leaving for the airport, check with the airline if there is any change in the flight timings.

  • If possible, print your boarding passes at home.

  • Know your baggage limits and pack what’s necessary. Some items might feel good to carry but aren’t really necessary. Skip them if you can.

  • Make a list of the handy items you will need and pack them separately. Realising in the plane that you packed baby food in the check-in luggage is no fun. This pack will also include all paperwork, passports, hotel & transport details, medicines and first aid.

  • Make a list of items you absolutely cannot forget and stick them on the fridge door, so that you can do a final check before leaving home.

  • Get a lot of pouches and separate the items to help you find them easily later. Label each pouch.

  • Pack enough food for your baby. Bring snacks for older kids. The airline may not have kid friendly snacks to offer.

  • Check in whatever you will not need till you reach the hotel.

  • Check to see if you can rent bulky baby gear like strollers etc. from your destination. That will save you the trouble of carrying it all the way from home.

 At the Airport:

  • Carry handy items to keep your little one occupied. Your baby can get cranky over minor things. Carrying a few distractions will be really helpful. Colouring books, crayons, small puzzles, stickers etc. were our favourites.

  • Leave home early to keep time for unforeseen delays. With kids around, you never know what can cause a delay. Budget for delays and leave home early.

  • Wear light clothing. Big coats, bulky jackets that need to be removed at security are an added burden.

  • Check with the airline rules on what is allowed in terms of liquids, gels etc.

Keeping these things in mind, will help ease your anxiety and help you enjoy a fun filled trip.
