Economically Weaker Section or EWS certificate is a certificate issued to those who belong to the Economically Weaker Section of the society. The honourable President of India Ram Nath Kovind on January 12, 2019, passed the EWS bill. The EWS reservation category is a sub-category that falls under the General category. Based on the EWS certificate, individuals will be provided with a 10% reservation on government jobs and admission for higher education. Therefore, an EWS certificate is an income certificate rather than a caste certificate. To know more in detail about the EWS reservation certificate, read the whole article carefully.

The economically backward class (EWS) in India is a sub-category of people belonging to general category with annual family income of less than 8 lakh sand not belonging to any reserved category like SC/ST/OBC (Central List). If the annual family income of ews candidate is above the prescribed limit, he/she will be identified as general category candidate and not from EWS category. The Central Government has introduced the Constitution of India (124th Amendment) Bill in 2019 on this category. The words economically weaker section (EWS) and economically backward class (EBC) do not confuse each other in India. The definition of EWS has been defined by the Government of India. But the definition of EBC and more economically backward class (MEBC) varies in different states and institutions. The Government of India has not given any reservation to EWS candidates in the past. There is a large percentage of the Indian population belonging to EWS category.

The eligibility to obtain an EWS certificate is based solely on annual family income. With that, it is based on the property they own. The Central Government Has Set an Income Limit for Admission to Centrally Owned Colleges and Joining the Jobs Offered by The Central Government. The state government has the power to further extend the income limit to candidates seeking reservation under EWS category in state-owned colleges and state government jobs. People belonging to economically backward classes now get 10% reservation in Education and Government jobs in India just like OBC, SC, ST.

Current definition of economically weaker section
