What is Education Beyond Classrooms?

Students standing

“Education beyond classrooms” is basically a term which describes ‘learning outside the classroom’ using an environment all around other than the classroom for teaching and learning. Children are provided with challenges and exercises to help them learn in a unique manner, the experiences received are exciting and often bring about improvement in the minds of children and their engagement in various activities which can be tough to bring about in traditional classrooms.

The purpose of “education beyond classrooms” has always been to value the student’s exposure outside the academic front. To be able to impart education using various strategic tools is an excellent skill therefore if teachers are able to make good use of methodologies such as bringing students out from the four walls of the classroom and making good use of the environment outside to learn.

Many advantages surface from this strategic teaching and learning method, having teachers who want to offer a new kind of learning exposure to the students implement this method so that there can be more engagement on the part of the student and simultaneously engagement piques the interest and creates a well-bound enthusiasm among the students. Let us have a look at some of the advantages of “education beyond classrooms”:

  • Real-Life Context: With students having to move beyond the four walls of the classrooms to learn a concept or topic, they are open to a wide spectrum of learning materials. They venture into a new environment where their mind can comprehend a concept with an actual example that is present right in front of them thereby giving them the context that is necessary to their understanding. Therefore, when students are given this kind of opportunity to be able to actualise a concept taught through an example that is available outside the traditional learning environment, they tend to learn and understand better.
  • Increases Self-esteem: The more the student is able to participate in activities that allow for his/her skills or understanding to flourish, the more their self-esteem increases. Thereby, when one learns outside the classroom, participation in the activities involved is required and students inevitably take part and this also builds up their confidence indefinitely. Increased self-esteem is a main benefit for it allows a student to have confidence in one’s own skills and talents and therefore, as students take part, they recognise their strong points more confidently and make good use of them.
  • Creates Enthusiasm: The outside environment brings utmost joy and content to the hearts and minds of children, and allowing students to learn outside their classrooms can set the base for their enthusiasm to flourish and engagement to take place fully. Hence, learning outside fabricates the right enthusiasm for students to engage in their learning methodology. Their interest is also endured as they are learning what is necessary and being provided with materials that are unique and essential to their development and growth.
  • Nurtures Creativity and Imagination: Creative results can be expected when the minds of the students are free to explore. For example, when they are taken to a site of historical importance to discuss and learn, their imagination is triggered and they begin to form their own understanding of that example given. Evidently, their mind is open to possibilities and questions over a certain topic and this sparks their curiosity and ultimately their interest is widened. They seek to learn more and this creates a meaningful and fruitful outcome for their own growth.

The impact created through “outside learning” is immense and the outcome expected to see in the development of the students is excellent and fruitful. A study conducted by LinkedIn confirmed that the brain reacts differently when students go for education beyond the classroom. This method of learning is also called experiential learning for a reason as it creates a significant impact on our success. The potential of learning in a student is discovered and maximises their quality of learning as it bridges the gap between classroom study and practical study.
