An extraordinary session of Global Education Meeting (GEM) among high-level political leaders, policymakers, Global education experts will be convened by the UNESCO, on October 22, 2020.The UN agency said the main motive of the session is to protect and promote education at a time when education financing is at risk of being left behind in the governments' domestic budgets.

The Assistant Director of Education at UNESCO, Stefania Giannini said, "By convening this extraordinary session of the GEM next month, our aim is to secure commitments from political leaders to position education at the centre of national and international efforts to recover swiftly, inclusively and sustainably from the COVID-19 pandemic."

Protecting domestic and international financing of education, reopening schools safely, equity and gender equality, etc. are few of the themes outlined in the session. Due to the closure of educational institutions globally, near about 154 crore students have been harshly affected by the same, as stated by UNESCO estimates.The UNESCO and UNICEF, along with the World Bank and the World Food Programme, have come up with a few guidelines to protect children's education and well-being.
