Tech makes a good teacher

The Annaswamy Mudaliar School located on Moore Road, Fraser Town, has been around for more than 100 years. Started in 1907, the school has been responsible for educating the poor and needy and has around 400 students currently. Due to the pandemic, education was disturbed for most of these kids, with worksheets sent only via WhatsApp. Wendy Kapadia, a teacher with the school and a resident of Hennur, spoke about her initiative to help collect second-hand smartphones for these kids. “I joined the school as a volunteer sometime in March this year. The school has always provided to the underprivileged, starting out from registering children from the most demoted groups” she says. This government-aided school charges a nominal fee from the students, many of who are orphans or come from broken homes.

“One of the teachers is also planning to open a home for some of the boys, as many of these kids are moved from home to home because of their behavioral problems. But we have seen that a lot of them are very bright and talented, especially in non-academic skills. While the Tamil-medium school is responsible for the academics, a new school, called Skylight, which is English-medium, has been opened on the same premises for enrolling those who are very bright, but not great at academics. Skylight helps in inculcating the sense of music, arts, and other life skills. We have musicians who volunteer to teach music, for example.”
