Republic Day

Republic Day, along with Independence Day are the two most important dates in India’s history that gave the Indian people their freedom. Let us educate our children about this landmark date to get them a perspective of our country’s history and its freedom struggle.

Republic day is celebrated in India every year on January 26th. When you discuss the day with kids, you are likely to face some questions from them.

What is the meaning of the Republic?

Republic is the opposite of Monarchy. The word republic means that which is public. So all decision are to be made by the people. Since it is not possible to make every decision of the country after consulting all citizens, the nation is run by representatives chosen by the people. This is the meaning of being a Republic.

Why do we celebrate Republic Day?

On 15th August 1947, India attained independence from British rule. This day is celebrated as Independence day. Thereafter, on 26th January 1950, the constitution of India came into effect. So this day is celebrated as Republic Day. A constitution is the set of basic rules and regulations that govern the nation. Every decision making done by the government has to abide by the constitution. Dr. B.R Ambedkar wrote the constitution of India and it is the longest written constitution in the world.

How is Republic day celebrated?

On this day, the Republic Day parade starts out at Rajpath and ends in Red Fort in the capital city of Delhi. The parade comprises of several interesting things:

  • The President’s Bodyguard, a 200 strong cavalry unit, escort the President of India to the stage and give the order for the national anthem to begin the celebrations.

  • The national flag is hoisted at the Red Fort.

  • World leaders and dignitaries are invited to witness the parade.

  • The parade showcases the strong military forces of the nation – the army, navy and air force. The flypast by the Indian Air Force leaving behind colourful trails of smoke is a sight to see. I remember running to our balcony as a kid to see if we can catch a glimpse of the smoke.

  • The horse march is also another important part of the parade.

  • A 21-gun salute is given to the National Flag and the President of India during the parade.

  • The parade is a beautiful sight showcasing unity in diversity as a nation. Each of the 29 states displays their culture and heritage through their tabloids (known as ‘jhanki’).

  • Bravery awards are given to soldiers and civilians.

  • The Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, given for exceptional service to society are awarded on this day. Martyrs families are given the Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakra.

Some special highlights of this year’s Republic Day celebrations are:

  • This year Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will be the chief guest.

  • For the first time, this year’s parade will see the National Disaster Response Unit (NDRF) display its efforts to save lives during cyclones, floods and other disasters.

  • This year Captain Tania Shergill will be the first time a woman army officer will lead the army day parade.

  • The air force new Apache attack will participate in the flypast for the first time.

So, do not miss out on watching the parade on your TV screens. Better still get tickets and view the parade live.

Watch out for this space for other Republic Day activities that you can do with your kids.
