At 15, most teenagers search for their identity. They are trying to figure out who they are, feel the need to be more in control and independent.
The following are likely behaviours during this phase of their social development.
Consider friends as important as family. Spend less time with parents, and more time with friends.
Feel an increased need for privacy and spend a lot of time alone or in their room. Unless you see warning signs of mental health problems, this is okay.
Become aware of their sexuality and curious about sexual activity. Some may become sexually active too.
Start to date. Spend most of their time thinking about their romantic interest.
Feel things deeply. Try to understand their own feelings. Have a deeper capacity for caring and developing more intimate relationships.
Struggle with peer pressure
Tend to argue. They may struggle with maintaining healthy relationships with peers and romantic interests.
Feel sad or depressed. If a period of sadness lasts more than a couple of weeks, consult your doctor.
Experiment with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
To protect them from the risk of getting involved in drug abuse, ensure you educate them about the harmful effects of drugs on the brain. Give them their space, yet be aware of their activities with friends and on the internet. So, in case they do get into trouble, you can be there before damage is done. Even though your teenager may not always want or ask for it, he/she is going to need your support.
