At 18, your child is now an adult. He has mostly moved away from his teenage phase and is thinking about the future in a serious way. Most 18-year-olds have had intimate relationships. They have a better understanding and awareness of their sexuality at this age.
Here is what to expect at age 18:
Moving on from ‘teen’ activities and prefer to be in adult social settings.
Become self-reliant and is able to make his own decisions.
Looking at serious long term relationships.
Able to combine emotional and physical intimacy in a relationship.
Comfortable around their parents. They still need parent support but only in guidance
Developing community consciousness. Likely to have strong opinions on social causes.
Less likely to fall prey to peer pressure
Discuss with your teen what he feels about his friends and whether they will remain friends in the long term, even if they move locations.
It is important at this stage, to give them the space to plan, facilitate and undertake their own plans. Also, involve them in decision making in matters of importance in the house.
