What is Holistic Education?

Holistic Education is an approach to teaching that focuses on the academics and social needs of students. The educators seek to fulfil the academics requirements of the students. And teach them the right methods by which they can face the challenges of life. They try to engage all aspects of the learner that includes the mind, spirit, and body. It necessitates skill mastery and advancement in all four domains. By the age of three, a child's brain has grown to 80% of its adult size. By the age of five, 90% of a child's brain has grown, allowing him or her to retain information more efficiently and swiftly. In this educational approach, the emphasis is on the positive environment of the schools. And also, on the thinking abilities of the students with their positive social behaviours.

What are the strategies of teaching under this methodology?

Now let’s have a look at strategies:

  • Transformative approach for learning: In Holistic education, the focus is on the transformative approach. It means education is not a process of transmission. The students learn through different experimental ways. They work in groups and enhance their abilities and skills through various practical projects.
  • Self-learning: This means that the students are allowed to learn at their own pace. So, the teachers try to teach students in their best possible ways. Also, they help them to increase their self-confidence. And they plan lessons that are for learning and not just academics.

  • Connection building: Teachers build connections with the families, organizations, and community members and conduct various programs (e.g., summer camps) for students.

Benefits of Holistic education:

A study on the condition of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECC and E) in Botswana discovered a lack of a prescribed curriculum and a very low rate of formal training of ECE instructors . As a result, given the current circumstances, it was vital to learn about the alternative training methods made available to working ECE teachers as well as the existing classroom practises. This section of the study mapped the perspectives of teachers working in ECE centres, as evidenced by their in-service training, classroom practises, and. The survey included 39 teachers from 39 ECE centres in the surrounding area. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect their opinions. The data was analysed using a quantitative approach. According to the report, over 60% of in-service teachers attended ECE workshops as an alternate training option. Nonetheless, the analysis revealed that the workshop content needs to be improved. It was also discovered that just 54% of teachers promoted holistic development, which catered to physical, cognitive, emotional, and social domains concurrently; while the rest promoted merely a combination of some of the developmental components, completely ignoring some key ones at times. The data also revealed that, in comparison to the other areas, a larger emphasis was placed on the development of physical aspects.

Now, if you are wondering about the benefits of this approach? Then let’s have a look at them as well.

  • The students perform not only well at the academic levels but also face life challenges bravely. They learn the right approach to deal with the obstacles.
