A new study highlights the possible presence of Arsenic in the water which is likely to contaminate the groundwater. Around 220 million people are currently risking their lives by drinking this highly contaminated arsenic water. Arsenic is present in trace amounts in many different types of soil and rock. It becomes harmful to people when it leaches out of these soils and into groundwater, which can occur due to a variety of chemical processes. Long-term exposure can lead to skin lesions and cancer.
The major hotspots for this disaster are Asia and South America but also some places around the Sahara and Arctic as well.
However, testing is yet to be carried on extensively in order to get some positive results.
