The Delhi Directorate of Education's School Management Committees (SMCs) has recently introduced a Parents Outreach Program that will efficiently help in bridging the gap between parents and school administrators. It will also help to increase the parents’ participation in various issues regarding the governance of the school.

The SMCs too were earlier introduced with the same endeavour in mind. But reports revealed that many parents were not even aware of the SMCs, only around 37% of parents were well-informed about SMCs. Now, according to the new reform, each SMC member will be held responsible to maintain contacts with the families of 50 students. Other interested parents can also volunteer as School Mitras and can take up the responsibility on another 50 families on themselves. Maintaining contacts also implies that they keep the parents well informed of the school activities and also aid to the parents’ queries and reports.

The SMC also needs to be in touch with the Teacher Conveners and let them know of the parents’ queries. A separate telephone helpline will also be set up to deal with anything that might be troubling the parents.
