On Friday, Mumbai Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said schools will reopen for Classes 5 to 8 in Maharashtra from January 27 after remaining closed for over 10 months amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, schools and colleges in Mumbai will stay shut “till further orders” said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The state earlier this month based on the COVID-19 situation in respective areas schools and junior colleges for Classes 9 to 12 had reopened.

The ground situation before taking a call on reopening schools and colleges will have to assess local authorities including district collectors, municipal commissioners, and district civil surgeon said Gaikwad.

All schools and colleges of varied mediums can stay shut until additional orders. The situation will be resolved after the assessment of a second wave of the virus that hit different countries and some states in India. Until January fifteen the BMC had determined to keep all facilities within the town shut.

All the state, national and international boards to conduct their scheduled examinations physically as per the timetable have been permitted by the civic body this week.
