This comes amid requests from activists, parents, and teachers to reopen schools, citing adverse effects on students.

"Demands are rising from certain quarters for reopening of schools as children are suffering the education loss", Health Minister  Rajesh Tope said.

The Maharashtra government had previously ordered schools to close on Jan 8 in view of increasing cases of COVID-19 and the highly infectious Omicron variant in the state.

Maharashtra recorded 43,697 COVID-19 positive cases on Wednesday, 10 percent more than Tuesday. With 214 fresh Omicron cases, the total fatality count also added to 49.
Total cases in Maharashtra now tally to 73,25,825, with the fatality count being 1,41,934.
