Drama in Education

Dr. Vohra has already been progressively introducing DIE in classroom learning as another lens to watch academic subjects through. The Greek used the word ‘drama’ with a meaning, ‘to live through’ and this is the context GEMS uses when they consider drama for the learning and development of children and adolescents. Drama would provide a learning situation to the young actors. A teacher/ facilitator working with young adults is going to be mainly concerned with the development of personality. The finished product in drama is not important, what should be of importance are the energy, deeper knowledge of both the disciplines, and growth of the participants. Drama is both a product and an art form in its own right.

Media Literacy

The purpose of Media Literacy in GEMS' curriculum is to explore a foundation to develop an informed citizen. Media literacy, as defined by the Center for Media Literacy, “provides a framework to access, analyze, evaluate and create messages in a variety of forms – from print to video to the Internet.  Media literacy builds an understanding of the role of media in society as well as essential skills of inquiry and self-expression necessary for citizens of a democracy”.

In the Pandemic time where news and social networking are a ground-breaking platform for reform, social change, political movements, propaganda, and consumption, global citizens need to analyze and evaluate the intricacies of media.  Students need to judge websites for accurate content and relevancy to their search, and utilize multiple sources and available media in order to be an informed citizen.  Specifically, students need to know how to evaluate and analyze media, decipher fact versus opinion, and then form a judgment of their own.

Theatre For Film

This is a new offering with respect to the ‘new normal’ of the Pandemic Times. Theatre for Film works towards GEMS' objective of a pluralistic conversation about Theatre and performance training and film pedagogy globally. This is just reaffirmation of the belief ‘Show must go on “digitally”’.

Through, theatre on Film they are trying to build a versatile approach, responding to the increasingly changeable nature of the theatre and film industries. Young Filmmakers will develop skills in performing, writing for stage and screen, directing, producing, and critically engaging with the language of cinema and live performance. Theatricality is all around in many of the popular art forms that engage us: The relationship between theatre, film, and television is very apparent. Movies provide dramatic material of many kinds. In many ways, the presentation of drama in theatre, film and television are much alike: Both offer a story told in dramatic form – an enactment of scenes by performers who speak and act as if they were actually the people they represent. The students of theatre learn the subtle art of “less is more”. Instead of from page to stage we build the technicalities of from ‘page to screen’.
