The Independence of India ushered in a new era. Himansu Kumar Niyogi, the founder of the school aimed at moulding the children of independent India into worthy citizens of the motherland. His long and intimate association with Sri Aurobindo and the Mother awakened his dream and inspired his endeavour. The New Horizon School was established in the year 1961. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was then the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Himansu Kumar Niyogi ardently desired that the foundation of the school should be ceremonially laid by the Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal. Dr. Roy suggested the name of the famous educationist Humayun Kabir as the most worthy personage for such a noble task. As destined, on the 21 February 1961, the birthday of the Mother, and with her blessings the foundation stone of the New Horizon was laid by the eminent educationist Humayun Kabir and the journey began. The building at Priyanath Mullick Road which was named "New Horizon" by the Mother assumed a new significance and became the venue. The New Horizon High School secured recognition and affiliation under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education on May, 1996. Monetary assistance and donation from the Mayor's Fund for the progress and improvement of the school enabled the installation of computers and facilitated the beginning of the computer education programme.
