About

St. Thomas Academy had humble beginnings. Late Fr. Antonio D’Souza, a visionary, started a kindergarten class, in November 1968. In 1968, under the aegis of Cardinal Valerian Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, the present parish of Our Lady of the Rosary was established. A piece of land was procured for the Church and the School. On March 19, 1969, foundation stone of the school building was laid. Fund raising was not easy, but through the herculean efforts of Fr.Antonio, a princely sum of Rs.4 lacs was collected. The Catholic community of Bombay diocese contributed almost the entire sum. The school building took shape in 1969. The Sisters of The Cross of Chavanod put the first faculty in place. Primary school with 3 classes, opened on 9th June 1969. In 1971, thru the efforts of Fr.Antonio, the Secondary School permission was granted. St Thomas Academy was now a full-fledged Primary and Secondary school. The clergy, the diocesan priests and the Sisters of The Cross and Poor sisters of Our Lady, have rendered yeoman service to the growth and well being of St. Thomas Academy. Today the School has three sections, Kindergarten, the Primary school and the Secondary school educating over 2400 students. St Thomas Academy is a recognised minority educational institution. The School imparts secular education in the English language, to all. Majority of the students belong to the non-minority communities. The existing school building, which has served the school for 45 years, needed urgent rebuilding because of structural distress. On 17th November 2012, the construction of Phase I of the New school building commenced and was completed on 10th September 2014 at a cost of Rs.9.50 crores, in short span of 20 months. Thanks to the untiring efforts of Fr.Richard Crasto, Parish Priest and Manager of STA, the Students moved into the New wing on 17th October 2014.
