Benefits of Brahmi in diet

Brahmi, also known as ‘Bacopa monnieri’, is a perennial herb which grows naturally in wet soil, shallow water and marshes.  For centuries, Ayurveda has used this wonder herb as a brain booster, to cure stress related ailments and to improve memory. It has many phytochemicals that are good for our brain. There are many valuable triterpene saponins and alkaloids in Brahmi that have a strong effect on the body.

You should include Brahmi in your diet for the following reasons:

  1. Reduces stress and anxiety: Brahmi reduces the levels of cortisol, which is known as the stress hormone. Chewing 2-3 brahmi leaves at a time can provide you relief from stress and anxiety.

  2. Treats cognitive disorders: Due to the presence of the amyloid compound in the neuron that is responsible for damaging the brain, brahmi relieves the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Brahmi is very helpful in preventing epileptic fits and other forms of mental diseases such as neuralgia and bipolar disorder.

  3. Improves memory: It has a positive effect on the hippocampus part of the brain that is responsible for intelligence, concentration and memory.

  4. Prevents cancer: Brahmi is full of antioxidants that are essential for living a healthy life. Antioxidants help in removing free radicals that can further mutate into cancer cells.

  5. Strengthens the immune system: Regular consumption of this herb can strengthen your immune system due to the antioxidant compounds in it.

  6. Relief from inflammatory conditions: Brahmi can be a great remedy that provides relief from arthritis, gout and other inflammatory conditions. It also helps in soothing gastric ulcers and treating an irritable bowel syndrome.

  7. Helpful in diabetes: Brahmi is known for regulating the blood sugar levels and helps improve symptoms of hypoglycaemia.

  8. Beneficial for hair and skin: Brahmi is good for treating hair problems like dandruff, itchiness and split ends. Applying brahmi oil can also reduce the appearance of scars, giving you glowing skin.

  9.  Improves respiratory health: Brahmi has been used in many Ayurvedic treatments for congestion, bronchitis, sinus, and cold. It can help clear excess mucus and phlegm and decrease the inflammation in the respiratory tracts and throat and thus provide you with immediate relief.

Interestingly, the leaf of the Brahmi herb is shaped similar to the cerebellum – that part of the brain which helps in controlling concentration and memory.

Though there are no known side effects of brahmi, however, excess consumption might lead to stomach disorders. You should avoid consuming more than 2 teaspoons of Brahmi.

Brahmi leaves can be used to make tea that helps calming you down and relieves anxiety and stress. Brahmi supplements in the form of pills or in powdered form can be taken after consulting a doctor.
