Benefits of mulethi

Mulethi or licorice is an ancient herb that has been used by Egyptians, Indians, and Greeks for treating a variety of ailments. Apart from its medicinal value, it is also used as a flavoring agent owing to its natural sweetness.

Here are some of the important benefits Mulethi has to offer:

  1. Keeps the respiratory tract healthy: Chewing on mulethi sticks is a good cure for sore throat. It has expectorant and bronchodilator properties and hence can cure conditions like cough, bronchitis and reduce the effects of chronic asthma. Another remedy is to have mulethi tea mixed with ginger juice.

  2. Boosts immunity: Regular use of mulethi protects the body from microbes, pollutants, and allergens, keeping you away from infections and allergies and in turn boosting your immunity.Although additional human research is needed, preliminary studies on mice have linked glycyrrhizin (a component of licorice root) to protection against certain viruses, particularly influenza subtypes. Mice treated with glycyrrhizin demonstrated considerable antiviral activity when exposed to a fatal dosage of the flu virus. When the influenza virus infection rate was tested on human lung cells, a 90% drop was likewise seen. Glycyrrhizin may have antiviral characteristics that should be explored further in humans. This antiviral action is thought to warrant additional research into glycyrrhizin for possible pharmacological therapy.

  3. Boosts digestion: Mulethi is known to relieve constipation, stomach discomfort, heartburn, acidity, and other stomach problems. In a 2012 double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 50 patients, researchers discovered that an extract of the plant containing licorice root, glycyrrhiza glabra, actually reduces symptoms of stomach pain on days 15 and 30 when examined.

  4.  It acts as a mild laxative, and hence useful in stimulating bowel movements.

  5. Cures skin ailments: Mulethi powder mixed with rose water or milk can be applied to soothe skin rashes and obtain a glowing skin. It is used in the treatment of eczema.

  6. Prevents balding: Licorice root has demonstrated phytoestrogen abilities, reducing testosterone that may lead to excessive DHT.

  7. Has anti-inflammatory properties: Mulethi is useful in the treatment of diseases like arthritis because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

  8. Eases menopausal symptoms: Mulethi helps bring hormonal balance in the body to ease menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, depression, mood swings, and sweating.

  9. Promotes a healthy liver: In an extracted form, Mulethi has the ability to protect against liver diseases such as Hepatitis C and Cirrhosis.

  10. Treats chronic fatigue: Licorice is one of the most effective herbs to regulate cortisol, making one feel more energized.

  11. Acts as Internal Sunblock: Licorice root strengthens the skin’s immunity and protects it from UV irradiation damage from within.

  12. Heals canker sores: Licorice has antimicrobial benefits that can heal canker sores by inhibiting the overgrowth of pathogenic microbes. A mixture of 1/2 teaspoon mulethi extract with 1/4 cup water used 4 times daily reduces the size of the sores.

Mulethi is generally safe to consume in moderate quantities. However, do consult a doctor before using it as a treatment for a particular ailment.
