Mulethi or licorice is an ancient herb that has been used by Egyptians, Indians, and Greeks for treating a variety of ailments. Apart from its medicinal value, it is also used as a flavoring agent owing to its natural sweetness.

Here are some of the important benefits Mulethi has to offer:

  1. Keeps the respiratory tract healthy: Chewing on mulethi sticks is a good cure for sore throat. It has expectorant and bronchodilator properties and hence can cure conditions like cough, bronchitis and reduce the effects of chronic asthma. Another remedy is to have mulethi tea mixed with ginger juice. 

  2. Boosts immunity: Regular use of mulethi protects the body from microbes, pollutants, and allergens, keeping you away from infections and allergies and in turn boosting your immunity.

  3. Boosts digestion: Mulethi is known to relieve constipation, stomach discomfort, heartburn, acidity, and other stomach problems. It acts as a mild laxative, and hence useful in stimulating bowel movements.

  4. Cures skin ailments: Mulethi powder mixed with rose water or milk can be applied to soothe skin rashes and obtain a glowing skin. It is used in the treatment of eczema. 

  5. Prevents balding: Licorice root has demonstrated phytoestrogen abilities, reducing testosterone that may lead to excessive DHT.

  6. Has anti-inflammatory properties: Mulethi is useful in the treatment of diseases like arthritis because of its anti-inflammatory properties. 

  7. Eases menopausal symptoms: Mulethi helps bring hormonal balance in the body to ease menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, depression, mood swings, and sweating.

  8. Promotes a healthy liver: In an extracted form, Mulethi has the ability to protect against liver diseases such as Hepatitis C and Cirrhosis. 

  9. Treats chronic fatigue: Licorice is one of the most effective herbs to regulate cortisol, making one feel more energized. 

  10. Acts as Internal Sunblock: Licorice root strengthens the skin’s immunity and protects it from UV irradiation damage from within. 

  11. Heals canker sores: Licorice has antimicrobial benefits that can heal canker sores by inhibiting the overgrowth of pathogenic microbes. A mixture of 1/2 teaspoon mulethi extract with 1/4 cup water used 4 times daily reduces the size of the sores. 

Mulethi is generally safe to consume in moderate quantities. However, do consult a doctor before using it as a treatment for a particular ailment.
