Vitamin D Linked to Higher IQ

Source:  Hindustan Times

A new study conducted by The Department of Child Health, Behaviour and Development of Seattle Children's Research Institute has concluded that good vitamin levels in pregnant women can lead to higher IQ in young children especially in the age group of 4-6 years. The study also found that women of colour are more susceptible to lower Vitamin D levels due to the increased melanin content of their skin.

Vitamin D deficiency in children and adults is a very common emerging problem. Though it can be rarely solved with sun exposure or diet control, taking supplements may help correct it easily. Women of colour have more melanin in their skin which protects them from sun damage but also reduces Vitamin D levels. The study urges healthcare professionals and pregnant mothers to be more vigilant towards their Vitamin D intake especially in the case of coloured women.

The study will create awareness about Vitamin D needs and help mothers to avoid risks of deficiency. It recommends pregnant women to take Vitamin D rich food. Though the study does prove prenatal vitamin levels to be the exact source for IQ determination, it does give us some insight into the probable causes.
