Plea Filed in Supreme Court

A trust representing private schools filed a plea in the Supreme Court. The plea sought to direct the Delhi Government to disburse all outstanding dues to them on account of imparting education to students from economically weaker sections and disadvantaged groups under the RTE Act.

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, otherwise called the Right To Education Act provides for free education to all students of economically weaker and disadvantaged groups. The Directorate of Education, Delhi Government has to ensure the same even in unaided private schools by reimbursing their expenses.

The trust represents 150 private schools in Delhi. These schools are in a tight position owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and the delays in payments by the Delhi Government. The Plea argued that the funds released by the Central Government to the Delhi Government for the implementation of the RTE Act should be disbursed to its rightful recipients i.e. the private unaided schools in the National Capital.
