Don't let Covid Affect your Career | Kavita Mehta |

Today’s students have a dizzying array of career avenues not available to earlier generations. On the one hand, it is exciting to have so many possibilities. But it can also feel stressful and overwhelming, especially with people unrelentingly asking, “What are you planning on doing with your life?” If you have no sense of purpose or direction, you could waste precious time in low-paying, dead-end jobs. Choosing a career path early can give you a jump-start on a bright future. Career choices are truly challenging as the decision you make has a great impact on all the aspects of your life. Choices are generally conditioned by many factors such as education background, personal values, social beliefs, financial aspects and geographical factors but in the end, your own set of values has the key role and the rest of these factors influence more or less this set of values. A wise career choice might be understood as a decision that has been taken upon a realistic filtering of all career options and personal competencies generally required for a particular job opening. It results in truly valuable expertise and personal satisfaction. Yet, career choices are not always positioned on this positive and happy side, as many persons who have pursued a certain career path have realized that they were all wrong and day-to-day job could not fulfill their expectations. However, career choice is definitely a tough decision but also a threshold that might be easily overcome as long as we follow some basic steps or guidelines. First of all, we should assess objectively our real abilities and see whether they match all job requirements so that we can avoid a huge and self-destroying gap between our expectations and the real demands. In addition to this aspect, we need to assess our chances to start a certain career. Some jobs have very rigorous requirements and generally, our education level and the sphere of interest control significantly our chances. In summary, our choice in terms of career governs our lives, therefore, we need to make the efforts to make the best decision.

Career Opportunities Post-Covid | Mahua Chakraborty |
Career Opportunities Post-Covid | Mahua Chakraborty |

Career selection is an important stage in a student’s life. It influences a number of decisions that he/she takes based on their career choices. Choice of a subject, a university, an institution, a company, a job profile depends on the career one chooses to pursue. Nowadays it is quite certain to find students confused or unaware of their career path, even after having completed their graduation. They seem unsure of the degrees they hold as it doesn’t given them a clear vision of what they want to do. Career Planning is no more a one-time occurrence that would end with the decision of the right university or college. It extends until we get the right job and get a satisfying work profile. After completion of schooling, one tends to select a stream based on their previous best performance. If a student scores 90 percentile in science, he/she wants to become an engineer/ doctor and likewise they go for commerce and every other subject. In more than 90% of the cases, it turns out to be haste or a wrong decision. The basis on which we evaluate our career choice remains unjustified. Students who face exam anxiety and fail to perform up to their standard in the classroom tests are left out in the race. They are treated as a non-performer or a below-average student. Similarly, there are few who manage to excel just by rote learning. Some depend on their families to make the right call; well, some choose to follow the crowd. There is no clarity of one’s self-interest. This is the first wrong step that can lead them to the wrong path. A wrong career choice can also increase the investment cost of a student in his/her education. Every time when a student’s career vision oscillates it calls for unnecessary expenditure. Most of the students invest huge amount of money as well as time in getting clarity over their career choice. They keep changing their subjects, even after having done majors in a particular subject they end up choosing a totally different profession.

How can Students plan their Career Post-Covid | Dr. Seema Dutt |
How can Students plan their Career Post-Covid | Dr. Seema Dutt |

Pitfalls for students to avoid when deciding on a career: 1. Choosing the same career as that of your parents or one that they want you to choose: Granted that parents always want your best. That however does not mean that the career that worked best for them, will also work for you. The economy has changed, business has changed, options have increased, choosing a career should be a personal choice. One that plays to your strengths and to your interests. 2. Choosing the first job that you get: Day one during campus placements are a big deal for students, often day one companies are the most coveted on campus. Just because they work for the majority of the students, does not mean that the companies work for you too. Along with the role being offered, it is important to consider whether or not the culture of the firm fits in with your personal values. 3. Choosing a job that has the best title: The younger we are, the more lured we are by big titles, students want to be vice presidents as soon as they start working. Most organizations are however moving to flatter structures, where a manager would have more than 15 years of experience and one would not expect to make a vice president before 20 years. On the other, even if you do get the title of a vice president, you will probably still be doing entry level work that is suitable for your experience levels. 4. Choosing a job based on compensation: This one is probably the toughest pitfall to avoid. The key is to remember that if the role that you are choosing, does not interest you, or does not play to your strengths, you will likely not do well in it. That will lead to getting branded as a non-performer, very early in your career. That is not a tag that you want or one that you can get out of, very easily. You may also find yourself bound by ‘golden handcuffs”, where your high salary does not permit you to take another lower paying job, even though you may realize that the lower paying job is better for you. Finally, a word of caution. It is not enough to just choose the right career. Making the right career work for you, takes effort. A lot of us believe that once we land the dream job, we can take it easy. Making a true success of your career takes continuous learning.

School Management in the Post Covid Era | Vanshay Goenka |

The rapid spread of the virus has left us with no way out but to seek safety and isolate ourselves in the confines of our respective homes. Educators, administrators, service providers, parents and students around the world are feeling the extraordinary ripple effect of the novel coronavirus as schools shut down amid the public health emergency. Like every sector, education is suffering at all levels. According to a UNESCO report, as of March 23, over 1.3 billion learners are out of school due to coronavirus. The closure of schools, colleges and universities has disrupted the flow of learning of the students and the existing method of imparting knowledge across the world. Several unforeseen challenges have erupted in the K-12 education, which needs to be addressed in a collaborative manner. The education of nine million children across 37 countries is currently at stake. Owing to a family-run school in Durgapur, Mr. Vanshay has witnessed the education space closely and has experienced first-hand the problems faced by educational institutions. This led him to start EnableCap in 2020, with the sole mission of developing accessibility to quality education with the help of technology. He has significant experience in management consulting and has completed his B.com degree from the prestigious St. Xavier’s College followed by a EY ISB programme in general management.

Gamification of learning: Making Education more Interactive for the Students Episode 3
Gamification of learning: Making Education more Interactive for the Students Episode 3

Gamification can be used in many different contexts. Businesses often apply gamification to employee training, recruitment, evaluation, and organizational productivity. Other uses include physical activity, voter engagement, and customer loyalty programs. The point of gamification is to inspire users to engage with the content. Especially with tasks that are not enjoyable, such as an in-depth safety training program and compliance training, gamification can be a great tool to motivate and engage the user. Some examples of game mechanics used in gamification are: 1. Goals Complete the task and get a reward, such as a badge or points. 2. Status Users increase their level or rank through completing activities. Leader boards show who is ‘winning’ and inspire users to work harder to compete. 3. Community Users are paired or put in groups to solve problems, complete activities, or otherwise achieve an objective. 4. Education Tips, tricks and quizzes are given to the user throughout the process. 5. Rewards As mentioned above, points and badges are common, and useful, rewards. Other rewards could be discounts, coupons, or gift cards. This fuels the user’s motivation and keeps engagement high. Successful gamification will tap into the user’s intrinsic motivation, such as becoming more skilled at their job, while offering an extrinsic motivation, such as rewards, points and badges. We have Dr. Meenakshi Narula, Principal of Shemford Futuristic K-12 School, Auraiya to tell us about ”A common problem during this period of learning revolves around online classes. How can we make online classes more interactive and engaging for the students?” Dr Narula is a multifaceted, versatile person who has command in teaching logistics of Science, the nitty-gritty of language and the technical concepts of IT while focusing on sustainable development goals.
